Bulldogs traveled to Berea Friday night for season opener
The Clinton County Football team traveled to Madison County Friday night, August 20, 2010, for the 2010 season opener against Berea.
Clinton County fought hard in the final minutes of the game, but couldn’t pull off the victory as the Pirates defeated the Bulldogs, 8-6.
The Bulldogs are again under the authority of Head Coach Jamie Miller. This year’s season opener came with a much closer game compared to last season’s matchup against Berea. Last year, Berea left town with a 28-20 win. Clinton County buckled up this year and almost pulled off a season opening win.
“We came out a little flat and decided we were going to play football after the first quarter,” Miller said. “Potentially, we should have, could have won. We have to learn to finish the deal. When you have an opportunity to win, you have to take advantage of that.”
Clinton County drove the field in the final minutes of the game only to come up short at the goal line.
“Dillon had a really good game offensively and defensively. He had 100 yards receiving on five catches and he had five tackles with four of them being for minus yards,” Miller said. “Matt had a really good game. He threw some really good balls, scrambled when he needed to and led the team in tackles with 11.”b
Neli Conner finished the game with 10 tackles.

Dillon Crawford, 84, and Matt Staton worked together to take down a Berea player during Friday night’s season opener. Clinton County held strong in the first half and trailed by eight points at half time. Clinton County made a run late in the game, but time ran out too quickly as Clinton County was defeated by two points, 8-6.

“Neli played very well for us on defense. He stepped up,” Miller said. “Small things like that carry over and start to build up. You build on momentum. You don’t just let it sit there. You could see that through the course of the game. We started moving the ball and forced them three and out defensively. We started taking control of the game. Sometimes it’s just too little too late. If we had another minute on the clock we would have won.”
Miller said his team traveled 90 yards in less than a minute toward the end of the game, but couldn’t get a ball in the endzone.
“We had two big plays. We threw to Jake Woodruff and he pitched it to Gavin (McWhorter) and went 61 yards,” Miller said. “Then we had another pass to Crawford and we get to the 15 yard line, but once again we came up just a hair short.”
Clinton County’s defense held Berea on the two yard line during their second drive of the game. Clinton County then got caught in their endzone to allow Berea to score a safety to move the score to 2-0 in the first quarter.
“I take a lot of responsibility for the offense ... giving up the safety and of course those two points were the difference in the football game,” Miller said.
“We’ve got to learn to make the plays. Three times inside the red zone and not get any points ... there is just a few things there we need to improve on as a team and myself as a coach, in order to come out with a win.”
Clinton County’s defense held up and ultimately kept Berea from scoring.
“The defense really played well after their first drive. Basiclly they did what they wanted to during their first drive,” Miller said.
Up next for Clinton County will come on the home front as Hart County is scheduled to come into town Friday night. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.

“We have watched their film and they are very similar to last year,” Miller said. “They are nothing that we can’t handle. They have a pretty solid football team. Last year they were able to get us and we had a little bit of scuffle with them and we just have to let our guys know that we are not going o tolerate any mouthing back and forth.
We’ve had to preach that all week because it’s obvious the way it happened last year that they were trying to provoke us into a fight and it worked.”
At the conclusion of last year’s game against Hart County, five Clinton County players were ejected from the game which also led to their supension of the following game.
“We will go out and play our game and I think we will be fine if we come out ready,” Miller said. “I think this year we can actually compete with anybody on our schedule, but we’ve got to come out and start the game ready to play.”
