Turnovers … by Alan B. Gibson

Eat big this week, then rest up

The “shape” of November this year, beginning on a Friday, means that the month will have five weekends, but only four Thursdays, which in turn, throws this week‘s Thanksgiving holiday seemingly falling a week later than normal – on the 28th, as opposed to say last year when we all sat down for the big meal on Thursday, November 22.

In addition to throwing the holiday season that follows Thanksgiving in to a seemingly rushed start, this year’s calendar situation also throws the start of the 2013-14 basketball season into that same rushed situation.

The KHSAA football schedule for the post-season playoffs govern when basketball games can begin, and the current schedule throws this weekend’s state semi-final championships to the Friday night following Thanksgiving.

With the current regs being that basketball can begin no sooner than the Monday following the conclusion of the football semi-final round – that means we’re not going to have our first tip-off this year until this coming Monday – which throws the start of the season into December.

So, while it may seem we’re going to get roundball off to a later than usual start this time around, don’t worry, there will be plenty of action available during the month of December to make up for it – especially during the first couple of weeks.

Gym night – including both home and away – put the teams and fans watching games four nights during each of the first two weeks, then we hit the third week of December and the start of that beloved holiday tournament run.

So, while it may seem that we’re getting off to a somewhat late start this season, never fear roundball fans, there will be plenty of catching up to come beginning next week.

My advice – eat big this week, then rest up because we’re about to have plenty of fun!
