Dawgs are 4th region All ‘A’ Champs

The Clinton County Bulldogs will travel this week to Richmond, Kentucky and to McBrayer Arena to compete in the All “A” Classic State Tournament.

The Dawgs won the 4th Region title for the second year in a row after defeating Metcalfe County in the first round, Monroe County in the semi-finals and Cumberland County in the finals on Friday night.

The Dawgs started off Friday night’s championship game neck and neck for the first half.

Cumberland County played tight with the Dawgs in the first quarter with three ties during the period.

Jackson Harlan scored the first basket on a mid-range jumper. Cumberland County answered with a basket to tie the score at two. Clinton County’s Chase Stines hit a three pointer to move up by three, but a basket by the Panthers cut the lead to one with 6:04 on the clock.

Stines came up again with a layup to put the Dawgs up by three, but once again the Panthers answered with a field goal to keep the game close, 7-6.

The Dawgs put together a small run mid-way through the first quarter on a basket by Seth Stockton and two from Stines, 13-6.

Cumberland County then put together a 7-0 run to tie the game at 13 with 1:40 remaining in the period.

At the 1:20 mark, Evan Dearborn knocked down a three pointer, one of his game total of five, to put the Dawgs up by three, 16-13.

Cumberland County answered just before the quarter ended with a three pointer to tie the score at 16.

Both teams went back and forth during the second quarter as Dearborn opened the second period with a three pointer. Cumberland County tied the game with a three pointer of its own, but a three point play by Stockton combined with a basket by Stines put the Dawgs up by five, 24-19.

Nick Brown hit two free throws at the 5:59 mark to put the Dawgs up by five, 26-21, but a 5-0 run by the Panthers tied the score at 26.

Harlan broke the tie with a field goal at the four minute mark, but back-to-back field goals by Cumberland County gave the Panthers its first lead of the game, 30-28.

Clinton County responded with two free throws by Stines, and two from Dearborn for a 32-30 lead.

Cumberland County hit a field goal with less than a minute remaining in the half to tie the score at 32 all, but Clinton County scored the final five points in the period to lead at the half, 37-32.

With a small lead heading into the second half, Clinton County couldn’t shake the Panthers at first. Cumberland County kept the game close throughout the first part of the third period, getting to within one point at the 5:50 mark, 41-40.

From that point, Clinton County took control of the game and stepped up on defense.

The Bulldogs finished the quarter with 17 points compared to Cumberland County’s eight to lead by 10 points at the end of three quarter, 58-48.

During the fourth quarter, Cumberland County never really went away, however, Clinton County had full control during the final period.

The Bulldogs began to work the clock and use it to their advantage while continuing to put points on the board.

Cumberland County finally gave in as Clinton County kept adding to its lead.

By the end of the game, Clinton County took the 20 point win, 81-61.

The Dawgs traveled to Todd County on Thursday night to play Monroe County in the semi-finals of the All “A” Classic 4th Region Tournament.

Clinton County started out on the slow side despite scoring the first basket of the game.

Monroe County hit a three pointer to take a one point lead, 3-2, but Stines added a field goal to take a one point lead, 4-3.

Monroe County put back-to-back baskets together to take a three point lead with 4:00 on the clock.

Clinton County cut the lead to one on a field goal, but Monroe County hit a three pointer to move up by four points, 10-6.

The Dawgs re-took the lead on a 5-0 run, 11-10, with 1:50 remaining in the quarter. Clinton County continued its run and led 14-10. Monroe County scored the final basket of the quarter to cut the lead to two points, 14-12.

In the second quarter, Monroe County hit two baskets to take a two point lead, 16-14, but a three point play by Harlan gave Clinton County a one point edge, 17-16, with 6:15 on the clock.

Monroe County hit a field goal to change the lead once again, 18-17, but a three pointer and a field goal by Dearborn put the Dawgs up by four points with two minutes remaining in the half, 22-18.

Monroe County finished the quarter with two baskets, one just as the buzzer sounded, to take a one point lead at the half, 23-22.

As the second half got underway, Clinton County opened up with a 13-3 run up to the three minute mark to take a nine point lead, 35-26. Monroe County answered with two three pointers, to cut the lead to three points, 35-32.

Brown added a three point play to jump out to a six point lead, but Monroe County was right back in with a three pointer to trail, 38-35.

As the time ran out in the third quarter, Brown hit a shot to put the Dawgs up by six, 41-35.

Clinton County continued to remain in control during the fourth quarter, however, Monroe County never really went away.

At the 2:30 mark, Clinton County had a seven point lead, 55-48, and then lost Stines as he fouled out.

Harlan was clutch from the foul line in the fourth quarter, hitting 11 of 12, and going 15 of 16 for the game.

As time ran out, Dearborn hit the final shot of the game to give Clinton County a 10 point victory, 69-59.
