Heavy rains dampen holiday week, weekend plans for many

Even with the elevated water level on Lake Cumberland, there was a very small crowd in the cove at 76 Falls this past weekend. With the lake being lower than normal during the past several years while repairs were completed at Wolf Creek Dam, a growth of young trees has sprouted up over the banks that used to be lined with houseboats during the fourth of July holiday.

A concern by many boaters is that those trees, once submerged when the lake reaches full summer pool, could remain in place, under water, for several decades.

Below, raging waters flowed down to Lake Cumberland from 76 Falls this past weekend as a weather system that reached from the Gulf of Mexico to the Great Lakes, dumped 4.91 inches of precipitation on the ground. in Albany, according to the W.K.U. Mesonet weather measuring station near the Twin Lakes Wellness Center.
