All “A” Golf tourney moved, then moved again and combined

Word came last week that already there had been some changes made in the 2013 schedule for the golf teams.

Originally slated to be played in Scottsville, for reasons that weren’t made clear, the course there would be unable to host the All “A” Regional Tournaments, so the event would be moved to Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park and would be hosted by Clinton County, which calls that course home along with Cumberland County.

The tournament was set to be played at Russellville on August 14 for girls and August 21 for boys, the new plans were to see the girls’ play taking place this past Monday (August 12) , and next Monday (August 19) for boys.

Then the weather came into play this past Monday, leaving the course saturated prior to the start of the event, and forcing the golf course personnel to close the course to prevent any further damage to the ground.

At this writing, the girls’ play has been moved to coincide with the boys’ play next Monday afternoon.

Should be a good tournament with a nice crowd of young golfers and parents/fans in the gallery.

Girls are slated to play the front nine holes, boys will play the back nine holes, with a shotgun start at 4:00 p.m.

Good numbers for golf teams

I enjoyed covering the Lady Golf Dawgs and Golf Dawgs last week in a three-way match at the DHLSR course as Clinton County took on Cumberland and Metcalfe County.

Watching the respective coaches doing the pre-match conference with the teams last Tuesday, I couldn’t help but think back to the mid 1970s when we were lucky to get to the course with four players for a match. A time or two, Coach Lindle Castle even had to recruit an extra player during school hours when he realized we were going to be short-handed for a match.

I remember one particular afternoon, I basically taught one young recruit how to play the game during the match.

And girls’ golf was non-existent at Clinton County back then.

Such was certainly not the case last week as the pre-match conferences took place in two separate areas – with both the girls’ and boys’ player numbers producing a nice group of youngsters getting ready to tee off for the three-way match.

Nice to see so many youngsters taking part.
