About a dozen tombstones were damaged by fire, when flowers were burned on the stones at the Morrow Cemetery, according to Wayne County Sheriff Charles Boston.

The sheriff’s department is investigating the vandalism that occurred at the cemetery sometime before Friday, August 2. That’s when the damage was discovered, but Boston said it could have occurred sometime in the three to four days prior to August 2.

Boston said the flag pole at the cemetery had been bent forward, and the flag was missing when Deputy Adam Dodson arrived to begin the investigation.

Boston said the cemetery had been vandalized about six years ago.

Anyone with information that will help with this investigation should contact the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department at (606) 348-5416.

The real property tax rate will increase slightly and the rate for personal and tangible property will decrease this year, according to a proposed ordinance heard a week ago Monday night by Monticello City Council.

The council heard first reading of the ordinance which would set the tax rate at 12.5 cents per one hundred dollars of assessed value. That is a slight increase over the 2012 rate of 12.3 cents.

The rate for personal and tangible property would be set at 13.8 cents per one hundred dollars of assessed value, down from 14.1 cents last year. This is the compensating rate which is determined by a state formula and will provide approximately the same amount of tax revenue for the city as last year.

The tax rate for vehicles and watercraft would remain the same at 22.5 cents per one hundred dollars of assessed value, according to the ordinance.

Since this was the first reading of the ordinance, no action was required by the council. It will require a second reading and approval.
