Football team found first win

The Clinton County Bulldogs haven’t won a game since September 18, 2009, against Caverna … until now.

Friday night the Bulldogs hosted Trimble County for its second game of the season and pulled off the 13-6 win. The Dawgs won its first game after 38 straight win less ones.

Head Coach Jamie Miller is thrilled with the win, however, he knows it’s only one game and now his team has to prepare for next week’s match up against McCreary Central.

“I told the guys the other night that we’ve had a long losing streak and now that’s behind us,” Miller said. “We are going to start a different streak now … a winning streak.”

The Bulldogs are 1-1 on the season after losing the first game to Pickett County, Tennessee. Miller believes only minor setbacks have kept the team from being 2-0 at this point in the year.

“Last Friday night against Pickett County we gave it away,” Miller said. “This Friday night we played well enough to get the win. We took care of the football and ultimately that was what helped us win the football game.”

Clinton County fell behind in the first quarter of the game, allowing Trimble County to score, 6-0. Trimble County opted to try for two points instead of kicking for the extra point, and was unsuccessful at the attempt.

Clinton County’s defense then kicked in and didn’t allow Trimble County to score for the remainder of the game.

At the half, Clinton County went into the locker room with a one point lead, 7-6, after scoring a touchdown and kicking for the extra point.

Later in the second half, Clinton County would score again off a pass from quarterback Austin Stearns to receiver Cole Nelson.

That touchdown would be the final score of the game, giving Clinton County its first win of the season, 13-6.

“We put it on the ground 10 times and I can think of only one error,” Miller said. “I think they did better with taking care of the football. That’s a big improvement.”

Clinton County will travel to McCreary Central this Friday night for the first of four away games.

McCreary Central is 0-2 on the season and has been shutout in both of its previous two games.

“I feel like we can compete with them and hopefully come out with a win,” Miller said. “We just have to take care of our thing and not worry about what they are doing. We can’t focus on what they are able or not able to do. We have to play our game and be solid offensively and defensively, take care of the ball and I think we will be fine.”
