A 21-year-old Russell Springs man died late Sunday, August 18, of injuries sustained in a wreck on the Hal Rogers Parkway in Clay County on Friday, August 16.
Jacob M. Lucas, who was originally from Letcher County, died at University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center at 11:26 p.m. Eastern Time Sunday, August 18, according to the Fayette County coroner’s office.
Lucas was driving a Ford F-150 truck that hit a vehicle that was stopped in traffic in a construction zone at mile marker 16 in Clay County at 4:53 p.m., according to the police.
Traffic had stopped at a temporary traffic signal that was set up where crews are restoring a concrete bridge deck. Transportation officials expect the restoration of that bridge to have been completed by August 30.
In a news release, the coroner’s office in Fayette County said Lucas, who was taken by emergency helicopter to Manchester Memorial Hospital and then transferred to UK, died of blunt force injuries.
Lucas’ story picked up statewide media attention as the week progressed as he was an organ donor and his organs saved at least four lives following his passing, according to various media reports.
