To the editor,
The story told in Ecclesiastes 9:13-16 is small in number of words, but huge in meaning. It praises wisdom above strength.
A small city with just a few people in it has a great king preparing to come into the small city and destroy it–take it over. A poor wise man in the city saves it by his wisdom. The poor wise man–and what he had done to save the small city–ends up forgotten.
Read the story again. Think of the small city as us as humans. Think of the great king as Satan–the Devil. Think of the poor wise man as Jesus Christ.
The great king, Satan, wants to go to the small city, us humans, so he can take over our souls. The poor wise man, Jesus Christ, fulfills the plan of His own death and resurrection to save the small city, us humans. So many forget, but that doesn’t mean wisdom loses.
In Mark 6:1-6, Jesus has gone back to His hometown of Nazareth. People were amazed at His wisdom as He taught in the synagogue. They remembered who all were in His family. Jesus was the hometown boy they hardly had any faith in.
Still today Jesus and what He did for us all gets forgotten. He gets lost in the rush of our daily living. If we would just slow down and think. This life is over so quickly. The next one is forever. Shouldn’t we be prepared for it?
