Circuit Clerk announces change in driver testing day

Would-be drivers, young, old or in-between, who wish to take their driver’s license test will now have a new day in which that testing will take place, according to Clinton Circuit Clerk Jake Staton.

Beginning Monday, September 30, driver’s tests, both the actual driving skills road test and written tests, will be given on Mondays instead of the long-time day of Friday.

Other than the change in days in which the tests will be given, no further changes in regards to areas of testing will take place and the new date will not affect anyone simply wishing to come to the Circuit Clerk’s office to renew their driver’s license, according to Staton.

The driving skills test will remain from 8:30-9:30 a.m. on Mondays, with the motorcycle and CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) tests being at 9:30 a.m. Also, the written tests will be on Mondays from 12 noon to 2 p.m. in the clerk’s office, located on the upper floor of the courthouse.

Staton also announced there would be a new Driver’s License Examiner, Johnny Tarter, who formerly conducted the testing in Clinton County and is familiar to the area.

“He (Tarter) is coming back to a familiar area,” said Staton, in making the announcement of the change last week.

The Circuit Clerk said he was contacted recently by Chris McKee of the Kentucky State Police, who had discussed the changes. He said McKee stated the primary reason for the change is to save mileage for the driver’s license examiners, thus saving money for the KSP. “It will allow examiner’s to drive less, but provide the same quality of service,” said Staton.

It has been publicized recently that the Kentucky State Police is facing some financial hardships, including having to lay off some R-Class troopers, and the organizataion is looking at ways to cut back and save money.

“Absolutely nothing will be changed as far as people renewing their (driver’s) licenses,” Staton stressed.

Anyone can renew their license during the Circuit Clerk’s office normal business hours, Monday through Friday and each first and last Saturday of each month, 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
