Arrival of fall season is a busy time for the agri family

It is hard to believe that fall is actually here, and I am excited! Fall is my favorite time of the year. Combines are rolling in the fields harvesting corn and soybeans, fall calving cows are having calves. Tobacco is being stripped and pumpkins and mums decorate the yards as the mountains begin to change colors around our beautiful County.

I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to our Fall Field day that will take place at Cravens Greenhouses and The Cumberland Co. Extension Office, a full description of the field day is listed below.

Clinton/Cumberland Fall Field Day

The County Extension Services in Clinton and Cumberland County will conduct a two county field day on October 10th and everyone is invited. Sessions at each location will run concurrently so visitors may select from the topics they find most interesting. The program begins at 1:30 p.m. at Cravens’ Greenhouse, 500 Cedar Hill Road in Clinton County and will conclude later that afternoon at the County Extension Office in Burkesville.

Topics include Greenhouse High Tunnel Technology (vegetable production), Bee Keeper’s demonstration, No-till Tobacco Transplanter and cover crops, Sweet Sorghum demonstration, Roadside Farmer’s Markets, Ky Blueberry Grower’s topics, Ag Diversification from Governor’s Office of Agriculture Policy, Black Powder Rifle demonstration, Pumpkin Recipes, Raised Bed Gardening, and Quilt Displays.

An evening meal will be served at the conclusion of the program so reservations are recommended.

Southern Ky Bred Heifer Sale

Cattle producers that are in the market for quality replacement heifers will not have to go very far again this year to find a good selection. The second annual Southern Ky Bred Heifer Sale will be held at the Bluegrass Stockyards in Albany on Friday October 25th starting at 6:00 pm CST. Make plans to attend this sale as there are several heifers in this sale that are being consigned by local producers.

October 8th / 6:00pm-7:00pm (CST) – Woodland Management and

Forest Certification

A woodland management and forest certification webinar will be held at the Clinton County Extension Office, Kentucky Master Loggers will receive one hour of continuing education credit. Please call the Extension office at 387-5404 if you plan to attend.

Billy Thomas, Extension Forester, and Christopher Reeves, Certification Forester. Kentucky’s woodlands can be a valuable asset for their owners if they are given the proper care.

Learn about the process of caring for your woodlands including activities, sources of assistance (including financial), and practices that will enhance your woodlands.

You will also learn how forest certification is benefiting woodland owners in Kentucky. These benefits include increased markets and price premiums being received by woodland owners for their timber, increased technical assistance, and global recognition of your good stewardship.

Certification is one of the many tools you will learn about in this webinar that can assist you in caring, protecting, and managing your woodlands for the future.
