Tennis teams pick up wins

The Clinton County Racket Dawgs played two matches last week with the first coming on Tuesday against Russell County, and the second on Thursday against Cumberland County.

In Tuesday’s match, on the girls’ side, Clinton County picked up five wins and five losses.

In singles play, Bianca Soma won 8-2, Holly Adams defeated Megan Polston, 8-1, and Laura Groce picked up a win, 8-5, over Russell County.

Danielle Brown was defeated in her match, 9-7, as was Amber Harper, 8-1, and Maegan Harlan, 8-6.

In doubles competition, the team of Adams and Harper won 6-0, and the team of Groce and Kiley Hoppe defeated Russell County, 6-1. The team of Katie Huff and Shana Shipman lost 6-2 and Brown/Soma was defeated, 6-0.

During Thursday’s match against Cumberland County, it was Brown, Soma, Adams, Harper, Groce, and Harlan picking up wins in singles competition. Groce lost her second match of the day, 6-1 and Hoppe, along with Huff were defeated by the Lady Panthers.

In doubles competition it was the team of Adams and Harper picking up the 6-2 win, Groce and Hoppe won, 6-1, but the Huff/Shipman team was defeated 6-5.

On the boys side, Tuesday, against Russell County, the team picked up five wins and four losses for the meet.

Jordan Vincent, Clay Choate, and Matthew Savage picked up wins in singles play. Kolby Smith, Kyle Choate, and Zach McFall were defeated by the Lakers, 8-6, 8-2 and 8-2, respectively.

In doubles competition, it was the team of William Cox and Chris Cox winning 8-4, and the team of Nathan Collins and Jared Hunter shutting out Ben Roy and Alex Mann, 6-0.

The team of Glen England and Haley Matthews were defeated 8-3, in doubles play.

On Thursday, against Cumberland County, the Racket Dawgs picked up 13 wins and dropped one match.

Vincent, Matthews, Smith, William Cox, Hunter and Savage all won their singles matches, with England picking up the only loss for the day, 6-4.

In doubles competition, Clinton County swept the series with seven doubles wins against the Panthers.

Both teams will be back in action Thursday and Friday as the Racket Dawgs travel to take on Cumberland County and Barren County.

The Clinton County boys’ team also traveled to Casey County Monday, but returned with no wins for the match.
