File under “Not a Good Idea”: Three adults have been charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor by Livingston Police Department after the group took photos of graffiti they tattooed on buildings on South Church Street and then took the photos to Walgreen’s on West Main Street to get them developed.

According to LPD Chief Greg Etheredge, a business owner on South Church Street spotted the adult males, identified as John Harper, Erik Haynes, and Cody Thrasher, along with two juveniles, ages 17 and 14, spray-painting graffiti on a building in the area Sunday evening, October 20. Upon responding to the call, LPD officers including Etheredge and Sam Carpenter reportedly saw “a large amount” of graffiti that had been spray-painted on three separate building structures in the vicinity, according to a report from LPD. The vandals had also sprayed a stop sign, the report said.

The witness was reportedly able to provide LPD with a description of the vehicle as well as a license plate number which came back on a car owned by Thrasher. Carpenter reportedly located the suspect vehicle at Walgreen’s a short time later. The witness reportedly came to the scene with Etheredge and was able to make positive identification of the vehicle.

The 17-year-old juvenile, a female, reportedly told investigators she was involved in the spray painting for her senior class photos. The report said Etheredge interviewed all parties involved in the alleged vandalism, and “all parties admitted to being a party to the spray painting of the buildings down on South Church, whether posing for photos, taking photos of each other in front of the graffiti, or physically spray-painting the property.”

While questioning the suspects at Walgreen’s, the report said LPD officers discovered an additional instance of graffiti on the front of the Walgreen’s building. Harper reportedly said he was responsible for that particular “tag,” as Etheredge said he called it.

“That was his words, ‘Tag.’ I said, ‘Are you all gang members?’ He said, ‘No.’ Well, why act like it?”

By the evenings end, Etheredge said, “We charged the juveniles with being unruly and delinquent by vandalism. The adults were charged with vandalism over $500 and contributing.” “I’ll bet you it’s $1,000 worth of damage,” the chief added.

“The Walgreen’s one, that’s brick, and even whatever they do to take it off, it’s probably still going to show something. Then it’ll be a different color than the rest of them.”

Etheredge said he had requested repair estimates from the businesses affected by the vandalism.
