The downtown Albany business community suffered the loss of another long-time business owner last week.

Bill Upchurch, 74, who owned and operated Bill’s Sunoco along with an adjacent business, Bill’s Tackle, passed away at his home last Wednesday, October 30, following a lengthy illness.

Upchurch had operated the service station and hunting and fishing supply business for several years at its present location, just a block south of the courthouse square at the corner of South Washington Street and East Water Street.

A favorite gathering spot of hunting and fishing enthusiasts, the business also served for many years as a check-in station during the Kentucky deer hunting season.

Upchurch, in addition to operating the businesses for many years, was also a retired Tennessee State Trooper and a retired Tennessee Fish and Wildlife officer.

A complete death notice for Willie Kyle “Bill” Upchurch appears this week on page 9.
