To the Editor,

The smartest people I have ever known never knew how smart they were. Things just came together between their ears that made perfect sense.

I was spending a beautiful summer morning in Vacation Bible School around 1960. It happened during an art lesson. We kids were painting over the pictures and words on plaques our teachers had made from molds. Our teacher was talking to us as we worked. She asked us if we knew why people come in different colors. I remember looking up and around. No one knew.

Here’s what our church teacher told us. God loves us all. God wants to protect us all. In some parts of the world, it gets really hot. People with light colored skin could get badly hurt from their skin burning. So God gave the people He placed there a darker skin color. Other places where it doesn’t get near that hot, God placed lighter skin colored people to live.

I learned that skin colors were given out of the love God had for all His people He creates. It’s a simple and beautiful truth. God is love.
