Overton County Sheriff’s Department and Tennessee Bureau of Investigation are looking for answers after a body was found in Overton County on Sunday, October 27.

According to OCSD Chief Deputy John Garrett, no significant details are being released at this time.

“All that we can confirm at this point due to the course of the investigation and due to circumstances beyond our control is the fact that we did find a body in Overton County. That’s all that we can confirm at this time,” Garrett said.

“Right now, that’s all that we can release,” he added.

OCSD Detective Tim Rosecrants confirmed that the body was found Sunday night, but otherwise was not forthcoming with details.

“The call came in on Sunday and that’s when we went out there,” Rosecrants said.

Pressed for more details, Rosecrants said, “There’s a reason we’re doing this–I just can’t talk about it. I’m not going to blow my investigation. I understand that people have a right to know, but I just can’t do it. The case is too important.”

Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Public Information Officer Kristin Helm shed some light on the condition of the body, hinting the person may have been dead for awhile.

“I can tell you that TBI is assisting the Overton County Sheriff’s Office on a decomposed body that was discovered yesterday in rural Overton County,” Helm said in an e-mail statement.

“The remains have not yet been positively identified, and it is unknown if foul play is involved. That is all we know at this time,” she added.

This is a developing story. More details should be made available to the media as soon as more information breaks.

A routine child exchange between parents in Livingston ended in a raft of charges for a Dowelltown man Friday, October 25.

According to a report from Livingston Police Department, officers Chris Gore and Sam Carpenter along with Sgt. Jonathon Swift and Chief Greg Etheredge responded to a 911 call at Jerry’s IGA parking lot after it was reported that someone in a white Nissan Pathfinder had pulled a gun on another person in the parking lot.

While en route to the call, officers reportedly observed a vehicle matching the description provided by 911 dispatchers. Swift and Gore pursued the vehicle, which reportedly turned onto North Oak Street before the officers initiated what the report called a “felony take down,” without incident, recovering a .38 caliber revolver from Derrick Hale, 31, of Dowelltown.

Meanwhile, Etheredge located the alleged victim, Jeremy Kangas, 32, of Overton County, at the Jerry’s IGA parking lot. Kangas reportedly told Etheredge that he had come to the parking lot to drop off his six-year-old son with his mother, Kristan Hale, 26, of Dowelltown, and her husband, Derrick Hale. Kangas told Etheredge that Derrick Hale had pointed the recovered revolver at him from inside the Pathfinder while he was giving some of his son’s doctor’s paperwork to Kristan Hale, the report said.

Back at the traffic stop, Derrick Hale reportedly admitted he was in the vehicle at the time of the alleged incident at Jerry’s IGA parking lot, and he indicated that he made a motion toward Kangas, but he denied pointing the gun. However, he did tell LPD he attempted to unload the gun while being pulled over because he had no valid gun permit and had been drinking at least 20 ounces of beer between Algood and Livingston, the report alleged.

Kristan Hale, meanwhile, reportedly admitted that she had allowed Derrick Hale to drink and drive with her two-year-old son in the vehicle from Algood to Livingston. She also admitted to driving the Pathfinder away from Jerry’s IGA after being ordered to do so by her husband, driving very close to a vehicle in front of her and “placing her children at risk of injury,” according to the report.

Derrick Hale was arrested and charged with attempted aggravated child abuse, aggravated assault, carrying a weapon for the purpose of going armed, and carrying a weapon while intoxicated, the report said.

Kristan Hale, meanwhile, was arrested and charged with attempted aggravated child abuse, according to the report.
