No new candidates file last week

After a blazing start in the numbers of candidates filing for nominations in next May’s primary election, the process literally came to a temporary halt last week as no one filed a petition to run for office in 2014.

Over 20 candidates, including 10 incumbents, filed during the first three days after filing began on November 6, but only a handful have thrown their hats in the ring since.

A total of 22 people filed those first three days prior to the Veterans’ Day break. The first full week to file saw an additional seven people–all seeking magisterial or constable seats file. However, from November 18 through November 25, no other candidate had entered the race for local office.

A total of 29 people are currently seeking their party’s nominations in Clinton County races only, with about one-half of that total being current incumbent office holders. Of the total number, 26 candidates are Republicans and only three are Democrats, all of the latter seeking the same seat of Clinton County Judge-Executive.

That total, however, does not represent the number of persons who have filed that will actually be on the May 2014 primary ballot in Clinton County.

A host of other non-local district, state, judicial or federal races will have candidates on the ballot, many in all counties in the state.

Those other races that will appear locally include two 40th District judge seats, circuit judge, state representative, state senate, Kentucky Supreme Court seats, U.S. Representative–First District in Congress and one of the two U.S. Senate races. All these candidates file with the Secretary of State’s office in Frankfort.

A listing of those candidates that will appear on the local ballot next May will be published next week.

All candidates have until January 28, 2014 at 4 p.m. local prevailing time to have petitions filed in order for their name to be placed on the primary election ballot.
