Filing for local office in next spring’s May primary election remained slow last week, but with the few that did file, it brought the total number of candidates seeking office in Clinton County above the 30 mark with a little less than two months to go, prior to the filing deadline.

It seems thus far that two of the more popular offices being sought to date is for the district seats of magistrate and constable as the two people who filed between Tuesday, November 27 and Monday, December 2, one each filed for those offices.

Jerry Craig entered the race for Constable in District 5 and Ricky R. Smith filed for Magistrate in District 4. Both are Republicans.

The latest to file brings the total number of candidates for Clinton County races only to 31. Of that number, 28 are Republican candidates and only three (all for Clinton County Judge/Executive) are running for Democrat party nominations.

There will be several candidates on the ballot in Clinton County next May for state and federal seats in Frankfort and Washington, as well as several judgeships, including Supreme Court justices to the Kentucky Court of Appeals or Supreme Court and three 40th judicial area races.

The latter candidates file papers with the Secretary of State’s office in Frankfort and include State Representative, State Senate, Congress and one U.S. Senate race.

The filing deadline at either the local county clerk’s office or Secretary of State’s office in Frankfort is 4 p.m. on Tuesday, January 28.
