It is with love and caring that the family of John “J.G.” Woodrum share that he peacefully passed away January 3, 2014 surrounded by family and friends. John was born August 24, 1938 in Albany, KY to Lorn and Golsie Woodrum (deceased).
J.G. arrived in Las Vegas in 1963 and after a colorful variety of job experiences, he went on to acheive his dream of making a mark in the city he truly loved by opening the Klondike Hotel and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip in 1976. He owned and operated his local establishment until 2006 and his love of the gaming industry spurred him on to purchase the Klondike Sunset Casino, which is still in operation today and staffed with loyal, dedicated employees whose service exceeds 30 years.
His roots, however, remain in Kentucky where he was raised with values of love, integrity and generosity; principles that guided him all the days of his life. And when success came to J.G. and Ellen, they were always willing to share their good fortune with friends, family and the less fortunate.
His sense of humor and talent for story telling are legendary, as were his accomplishments on golf courses both here and around the world…yes, he did get his “hole in one”!
His legacy as a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather will live on in the beautiful memories he leaves us, full of love, loyalty, wisdom and kindness. He kept his loved ones on his mind and in his heart always. There will never be a moment that we will not miss you. him.
J.G. was preceded in death by his brother, Roscoe Woodrum, sisters Lorene Dean, Maxine Conner and Christine Thrasher.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 46 years, Ellen Marie Woodrum; daughter, Lisa Marie Woodrum, son, John Michael (Mike) Woodrum, Karen Woodrum (daughter-in-law and mother of his three grandchildren: Lauren, Cole and Logan Woodrum. Other surviving loved ones include Kathy White (sister), Deanna and Sully Sullivan (sister and brother-in-law), as well as several nieces, nephews, his extended family, The Parks and many, many wonderful friends.
