Word spread quickly on Sunday afternoon, December 29, that a shooting just outside Fountain Run had injured two people.

Just after 3 p.m., the Monroe County 9-1-1 dispatch center received a call that shots had been fired outside at the residence of 13368 Fountain Run Road. As Monroe County Sheriff’s Department personnel, Monroe County Ambulance Service and Fountain Run Volunteer firemen raced to the scene, Kentucky State Police Post 15 was notified of the shooting.

Upon first responders’ arrival, they found 34-year-old Chris Burgess suffering from a gunshot wound to the stomach and Rita Downing, 49, was shot in the arm. Both are from Scottsville.

Firemen set up a landing zone at APACE near the home, where two Air Evac helicopters were landed to transport Burgess and Downing to Vanderbilt University Hospital.

Rick Wyatt, 38, of Austin, was still on the scene and was later arrested and charged with first degree assault in connection with the shootings.

KSP Detective James Richard, who is investigating the incident, noted in the official press release that Wyatt and Burgess had been involved in a physical alternation prior to the shooting.

No further details were released at press time.
