Clinton County picks up win over Russell, falls to Cumberland

The Clinton County Lady Bulldogs lost its first game of the Touchstone Energy All “A” Classic Regional Tournament Monday night to Monroe County.

The Lady Dawgs were out matched from the tip off as Monroe County outscored Clinton County 20-4 in the first quarter.

The remainder of the half went much the same as Clinton County struggled to control its offense and couldn’t stop the offense of the Lady Falcons.

Clinton County headed into the locker room at the half trailing by 19 points, 40-21.

The second half went much the same way as Monroe County continued to put points on the board.

Monroe County scored 14 points in the third quarter compared to seven for the Lady Dawgs to lead 54-28 after three.

Clinton County did manage to outscore the Lady Falcons in the final period, 16-13, but the damage had already been done, dropping Clinton County out of All “A” competition for 2014.

The final of Monday night’s game ended with a 23 point loss for the Lady Dawgs, 67-44.

The Lady Dawgs defeated Russell County Friday night to move to 4-2 on the year in district play.

The only two losses in district play came to Cumberland County twice. As far as district seedings are concerned, Clinton County has one of the top records in the district, but with the other three teams having not completed its district games as of Monday, January 20, the Lady Dawgs will have to see how those games play out before district parings will be finalized.

Friday night’s game started off for Clinton County dead even throughout the first quarter, tied at the 3:55 mark at four and at the 1:28 mark at six. Clinton County finished the quarter with a 10-8 lead over the Lady Lakers.

During the second quarter, Clinton County fell behind, only scoring nine points in the period. Russell County scored 15 to take a four point lead at halftime, 23-19.

The Lady Dawgs continued to struggle during the third period, but matched Russell County point for point during the eight minutes, 8-8, to trail by four at the end of three, 31-27.

As the fourth quarter got started, Clinton County began to show signs of life and outscored Russell County 9-4 during the first four minutes to take a one point lead, 36-35.

Russell County then scored four unanswered points to take a three point lead, but Clinton County tied the score at 39 with 45.7 seconds remaining in the game.

With 31.5 remaining, Tara Elmore hit a free throw to make it a one point lead, but a three point play by Russell County gave the Lady Lakers a two point lead with 26.6 seconds remaining, 42-40.

With 11.1 on the clock, Ansley Stalcup hit two free throws to tie the game at 42 and sent it into overtime.

During the overtime period, it was all Clinton County as the Lady Dawgs outscored the Lady Lakers, 13-7.

Clinton County’s free throw shooting played a huge role in the win as the Lady Dawgs hit seven in the final 1:38 to grab the victory, 55-49.

The Lady Dawgs lost its second game of the season to Cumberland County Tuesday night, January 14, at home, 50-43.

The only two losses Clinton County has in district play are to the Lady Panthers.

During the first quarter, Clinton County jumped out to a 7-3 lead during the first five minutes. Cumberland County scored three more points in the period, whereas Clinton County only scored two. The Lady Dawgs finished the quarter with a three point lead, 9-6.

The Lady Dawgs fell behind in the second quarter and struggled from the floor nearly the entire game, which led to Cumberland County tying the game at 12 with 2:59 remaining in the half.

Clinton County finished the second period with only five more points, compared to Cumberland County’s seven. The Lady Dawgs trailed by two at the half, 19-17.

Cumberland County continued to control the tempo of the game in the second half, outscoring Clinton County 13-10 during the third quarter to lead by five points at the start of the fourth quarter, 32-29.

Clinton County’s poor shooting from inside the lane during the second half is what gave the Lady Panthers the advantage and ultimately led to the win for Cumberland County.

As the final buzzer sounded, Clinton County found itself on the bottom end of a 50-43 ball game and its second district loss of the season.

The Lady Dawgs will host Russellville Saturday afternoon with a 4 p.m. tip off, followed by a road tip to McCreary Central on Monday for a 7:30 p.m. tip off.
