Two more candidates have filed for office in Clinton County, bringing the total number thus far to 40 and counting.
Due to County Clerk’s offices being closed Saturday and Monday, January 18 and 20, in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the totals at press time Tuesday, January 21 included those persons who had filed through 4 p.m. on Friday, January 17.
The latest candidates to file for local office were Tracy Thurman, a Republican candidate for jailer, and Gary Rex Guffey, a Democrat candidate for constable in the third district.
Although there were only two new candidates to file in Clinton County, a total of three additional candidates appearing on the Secretary of State’s website in Frankfort saw an additional three persons whose name will appear on the May primary ballot locally.
Filing for U.S. Senate was Democrats Burrell Charles Farnsley and Gregory Brent Leichty, both of Louisville. This brings the total number of candidates seeking that particular seat to seven–three Republicans and three Democrats.
Also filing for State Senate in the 16th District was Campbellsville Republican George Maxwell Wise, who will be running against incumbent Republican Sara Beth Gregory of Monticello.
With the latest candidates who have officially filed, a total of 57 people will be on the Clinton County primary ballot.
Of the 40 total local candidates in the running, 36, or 90 percent, are Republican and only four (10 percent) are Democrat candidates.
The most candidates for any particular office this far is six for Clinton County Judge/Executive–three each Republican and Democrat, and six for Clinton County Jailer, all Republicans.
There are also a relatively high number of magisterial candidates, although two districts have only one candidate thus far, and an unusually high number of total candidates for the office of constable in the six county districts.
The numbers, especially locally, are expected to pick up as the deadline for filing nears at 4 p.m. local prevailing time on Tuesday, January 28.
