Turnovers … by Alan B. Gibson

Back to the regular season – well maybe not so quick

Seems some years we glide right through the roundball season without hardly a hitch, and then there are years like this one.

But then again – we are in southern Kentucky and like they say, if you don’t like the weather here, well stick around a day or two, it will change.

Of course some of the schedule changes were brought about by the All ‘A’ Classic tournament, and win or lose, those changes come about nearly every year, and are actually built into the schedule expected to be changed at some point, depending on whether Clinton County teams win and advance, or whether other All ‘A’ teams win and advance, and it doesn’t necessarily mean a team has to advance all the way to the state to be forced to make schedule changes.

Anyway, after exiting the All ‘A’ in the opening round, the Lady Dawgs and Bulldogs had a brief lull in the schedule for the rest of that week. Then came the All ‘A’ results from other schools, then came Mother Nature with some nasty ice, cold and the weekend’s snow.

Now my calendar looks like a three-year old has had ahold of it, but as best I can tell, at this point on Tuesday morning, from information I’ve been given by C.C.H.S. Athletic Director Mike Beard, here’s what is going to happen.

The makeup game with the Bulldogs playing host to Whitley County, that was supposed to happen last Friday, then again last Saturday, has been rescheduled for this Saturday, February 1, at Clinton County High School. The junior varsity tips at 3:00 p.m., followed by the varsity at about 4:30.

The Lady Bulldog game against Russellville that was snowed out last Saturday, is probably not going to be made up at all.

The double-header that was scheduled for Friday, February 7, with C.C.H.S. hosting Glasgow, has been cancelled on both counts, partly due to the All ‘A’ Classic tournament and partly due to the Scotties needing the date to makeup a game with one of their district opponents.

And finally, at least for now, don’t forget the time change for the February 15 Bulldog trip to play against South Laurel. The junior varsity is now slated to tip at 4:30 central time.

16th District standings

There is no doubt at all after finishing with a perfect 6-0 record against 16th District teams in regular season play that the Bulldogs will be the No. 1 seeded team when the post season 16th District Tournament rolls around at the end of February.

There is some question about the standings in girls play, however, and it’s looking like there will be a coin flip of some sort taking place when the schools meet for the pre-tourney arrangements.

The Lady Dawgs are finished with 16th District regular season play and have put up a nice 4-2 record. Russell County came out on top of Cumberland County this past Monday night with a 58-57 OT win, which places both the Lady Lakers and the Lady Panthers with 3-2 records and both still yet to face Metcalfe County.

The Lady Panthers were set to go up against the Lady Hornets on Tuesday night of this week (too late for press time) while the Lady Lakers are scheduled to play Metcalfe on Friday, February 7.

Should Russell County and Cumberland emerge with victories, then we’re looking at three teams with 4-2 records, and a three-way tie for first. Only one team loses to the Hornets, then it’s a two-way tie for first, and should the Lady Hornets win both games, Clinton County would be the out-right first place seeded team.

Now, speaking of the 16th District sweep, the Bulldogs pulled off this season with a perfect 6-0 mark, AD Beard did a little research and came up with the fact that Clinton County last swept the 16th regular season games in the 1999-2000 season and Russell County was the most recent team to pull off the sweep in the 2009-2010 season. Both squads also won the 16th District Tournament in those respective years, as well.
