Turnovers … by Alan B. Gibson

One more change – but it’s a minor one this time

As has been the case for the past few weeks, we’ve put in a lot of time in this space trying to keep Clinton County fans abreast of the schedule changes that have been caused by the somewhat violent mood Mother Nature has displayed this winter.

Just a reminder that Friday’s games appearing on schedules against Glasgow have been cancelled – due to no weather related issues but instead with a conflict concerning their All “A” state tournament run and maximum game rules.

So, as it stands now, the only additional change we know about still in front of us at this time – and it seems that like Kentucky weather, that’s all subject to change at the drop of a snowflake – is a lineup and starting time issue for Saturday’s games against Pulaski County.

What was originally supposed to be a three-game lineup Saturday beginning with a girls’ freshman game, followed by junior varsity and varsity girls’ game, is now just a junior varsity-varsity lineup with an even earlier than planned starting time. JV girls tip at 1:00 p.m., followed by the Lady Bulldogs – Lady Maroons tip at about 2:30 p.m.

CCHS Athletic Director Mike Beard, who, by the way, has done an absolutely fantastic job not only of working this year’s schedule shuffle, but at keeping us all informed about the changes, deserves a huge pat on the back. Even what would seem like a minor change that we’re talking about for Saturday’s lineup, becomes a major headache and a ton of contacts that are necessary for an Athletic Director.

Making sure building staff – cleanup, concessions and ticket workers – are able to be on board, changing the appointment for heating the building, getting in touch with us media folk and making arrangements to get the volunteers at the official table informed then making sure the game officials can meet the altered starting times and seeing that the CCHS Cheerleaders, Band and the JROTC Bulldog Battalion are on board with the new arrangements, then altering any practice schedules that other teams might have been expecting to have. I’m sure that’s just part of what he goes through just to move a game ahead by a couple of hours – as is the case in Saturday’s situation.

Most of us just have to adjust our TV schedule when game times and dates are altered for whatever reasons.

I’m big on thanking and congratulating the players and coaches who step up to shine in the big games – but we often overlook those who work relentlessly behind the scenes to make sure our Lady Bulldogs and Bulldogs have the proper, working stage to shine on.

I’ll make the attempt to fix that oversight right now in this space …

thanks Mike Beard for all you do!
