Dawgs get revenge, rout Monroe by 34

The Clinton County Bulldogs won two games this week, one on the road at South Laurel, 49-48, and a revenge win against Monroe County on Friday night at the Castle, 78-44.

The Bulldogs traveled to London, Kentucky Saturday night to take on the Cardinals of South Laurel.

In the first quarter, Clinton County held a slight edge over the Cardinals, 12-8. In the second quarter, South Laurel tied the game at 14-14, then took the lead 16-14. Colby Langford hit a three pointer to regain the lead, 17-16, and Lance Claywell added a three pointer to give the Dawgs a four point lead, 20-16.

Toward the end of the half, South Laurel put together an 11-5 run to take the two point advantage going into halftime, 27-25.

As the second half got underway, Clinton County’s scoring was relatively average, putting up 14 points in the period compared to South Laurel’s 12. At the end of the period, both teams were tied at 39 with eight minutes remaining in the game.

The Bulldogs held strong on defense during the fourth quarter, but struggled to separate itself from the Cardinals.

The game went back and forth throughout the entire fourth quarter but, Clinton County did, however, manage to outscore South Laurel in the final period. Langford was fouled with seven seconds remaining and he hit one of two from the line to give the Dawgs the one point lead and what ended up being the final score giving the Dawgs its 19th win of the season, 49-48.

Clinton County hosted Monroe County Friday night for its third meeting between the two teams and the final home game of the 2014 regular season.

Clinton County had somewhat of a point to prove during Friday night’s game, with Monroe County defeating the Dawgs during the first round of the All “A” Classic on January 20, 61-57.

With senior night festivities performed in between the girls’ and boys’ game prior to tip off, Clinton County started the game with Clay Choate, Parker Means, Langford, Josh Tallent and Dalton.

Means scored the first basket of the game, followed by a basket by Dalton and Langford for a quick 6-0 lead.

Monroe scored with 4:46 on the clock and then again at 4:06, but back-to-back baskets by the Dawgs put Clinton County up 10-4 with less than three minutes remaining in the quarter.

Clinton County was firing on all cylinders during the game and finished the quarter with a nine point lead, 19-10.

The second quarter went much like the first as Clinton County continued to drop in baskets against the Falcons.

A 10-0 run to open the second quarter put the Dawgs up by 19, 29-10. The Dawgs finished the half with a 21 point lead, 41-20.

The Dawgs came out at halftime and continued to push the ball and score at will. Clinton County reached a 35 point lead with 2:33 on the clock by putting together a 20-5 run and set the continious clock into play, 61-25.

Clinton County finished the quarter with a 66-31 advantage over the Falcons.

During the final quarter, Monroe County did manage to outscore Clinton County, 13-12, but the damage was done in the first three quarters as Clinton County coasted to victory during the fourth period, 78-44.

Clinton County will travel to Barren County Thursday night to take on the Trojans in the final regular season game of the year with tip off scheduled to follow the Lady Dawgs’ game which will begin at 6 p.m.

Clinton County will then play host to the 16th District tournament and will open the tournament with the first round game on Monday, February 24, against Metcalfe County.

The Dawgs picked up the number one seed by finishing the regular season undefeated in district play, 6-0.

Monday’s district game is scheduled to tip off at 7:45 p.m. at The Castle.

Colby Langford, one of four seniors on this year’s team, put up 21 points for his final regular season game at The Castle. Langford will head into Thursday night’s game against Barren County 59 points shy of the 1,500 career point mark. Point guard Keifer Dalton moved past the 1,500 career point mark during the Caverna game at home last week.
