Clinton County wins over 4th Region opponent, takes on Cumberland County in district play

The Clinton County Lady Bulldogs are one win away from evening its record to .500 for the season after the 4th Region win at Barren County Thursday night, 61-52.

The Lady Dawgs started the game by quickly scoring seven points for a 7-0 lead.

Past the midway point in the first quarter, Barren County had put some points on the board, but Clinton County remained in control of the game with an 11-6 advantage.

With 2:40 left in the period, Ansley Stalcup hit a three pointer to put the Lady Dawgs up by eight. Barren County came back and added five points to its side of the board before the quarter ended, 16-11, Clinton County’s lead.

Clinton County opened up the second quarter with a 6-2 run to take a 22-13 lead over the Lady Trojans. A 5-0 run from Barren County cut the Lady Dawgs’ lead to only four points, but a three point play by Stalcup, pushed the lead to seven points, with 4:15 on the clock, 25-18.

Barren County scored a basket on the next possession, cutting the lead to five, but as Shyanne McWhorter’s third three pointer of the game landed in the net at the 4:01 mark, the lead went to eight points, 28-20.

Both teams would finish the half with Barren County putting up five points to Clinton County’s three for a 31-25 score at the half.

With the Lady Dawgs still in control, and a six point halftime lead, Clinton County quickly added points on the board in the beginning of the third quarter, 37-25.

Midway through the quarter, Clinton County maintained its sizable lead, 43-32, and finished the quarter with a 49-42 advantage.

The fourth quarter continued to go down hill for the Lady Trojans, but they managed to get to within four points with a minute remaining in the game, 56-52.

The Lady Dawgs held Barren County scoreless for the final minute, while putting up five points to reach the 61-52 final.

Clinton County was back in action Tuesday night, too late for press deadline, against Cumberland County at The Castle for the first round of the 16th District Tournament.

The finals for the girls’ district tournament will be held Thursday, February 27, at 7 p.m. at Lindle Castle Gymnasium.

Russell County will be one of two teams playing in the finals as the Lady Lakers defeated Metcalfe County Monday night in its opening game, 53-43.

Shyanne McWhorter knocked down a three pointer in the first half against Barren County. McWhorter hit three three pointers in the first half. She finished the game with 16 points as the Lady Dawgs took the victory, 61-52.
