Voter registration deadline is April 21

Now that spring has finally arrived, it seems things are moving at a faster pace and so to is the upcoming primary election, which is now just weeks away. With the May primary drawing closer, there are some dates that some voters and non-registered voters alike may be interested to know.

Any resident 18 or over not yet a registered voter has until Monday, April 21 to register in the county clerk’s office if they wish to be eligible to vote in next months election. Registration books will be closed from Tuesday, April 22 through the first Monday following the primary race, May 26.

Also, voters who have to cast a ballot by absentee should remember the following dates:

* May 2 through May 19: Voter may make application to vote absentee in the clerk’s office at least 12 working days before the primary.

* May seven through May 20: Voter and his/her spouse may request paper absentee ballot because of medical emergency within 14 days or less of an election.

* May 9: Last day to apply for a mail-in absentee ballot (not less than close of business 7 days before primary) Applications must be received my this date.

* May 9 through May 19: Members of the Armed Forces confined to a military base on election day who learn of that confinement within 7 days or less of an election may make application to vote absentee in the clerk’s office.

Following the primary, any candidate who requests a recanvass of votes has until Tuesday, May 27 at 4 p.m. and any recanvass request shall be conducted by the local board of elections at 9 a.m. on Thursday, May 29.
