Halloween

memories

As I was growing up I had three older brothers, who always seemed to watch out and protect me or give me advice. The middle brother would always “protect” me around Halloween time. That was my brother Kenny. I called him bubby Kenny, he lived with us and every Halloween he seemed to trick me into sharing my candy with him.

My mother and father would always get me ready for Halloween and as we would start out the door my bubby Kenny would tell me to be sure and do not eat the candy until we check it out when you get back home because you do not know what people might put in it.

As I was out trick-or-treating I would just be dying to eat some of my candy that I had got that night but what bubby Kenny said would stick in my head and I would try my best to wait until I would get home. I looked forward to getting home and going through my candy with him each Halloween. After we would get done trick-or-treating I would want to rush home and rush in the house and scream at him downstairs that I was home. He would run up the steps and we would take my big bag of candy and spread it out on the floor, needless to say that would always upset mom and dad.

Bubby Kenny would pour out the candy and start looking for “the bad candy” or so he called it. It always seemed funny though that his pile of “bad candy” was much larger than my pile of good candy. He would tell me he would take care of the bad candy for me, which was always the Tootsie Rolls, Super Bubble and Snickers. When he would tell me that he would take care of the bad candy, I would ask him why he could get the bad candy and I could not and he would always say because he was older and it would not hurt him. As I got older I soon caught on to what he was doing but I still let him go through my candy and he would still get the bad looking candy as he called it.

Today I realize that was me and my bubby time and I look back on how much fun we had. I guess what I am trying to say is when you are younger, silly things do not mean a lot but when you get older you realize that you have created precious memories that will last a life time. I will always cherish my older brother wanting to protect me even though I thought I did not need it, everybody needs protecting occasionally.
