Cumberland County Superintendent of Schools Glen Murphy has announced his retirement which is effective at the end of this school year, June 30, 2014.

“It is with a heavy heart that I have decided to retire from the position of Cumberland County School Superintendent,” Murphy said. “I have worked for the school system for 29 years and can honestly say I have loved every day of it. I just feel for my family and myself that it is time that I move on to the next chapter of my life and I have no idea what that holds except to be with my family and friends.

“Education is the most important aspect of a young person’s life and I truly hope that in my 29 years that I have had more positive impacts on students than negative. When I became an educator, it was to help students become capable of leading a productive life once they reached the age that they would be on their own and I still try to do that 29 years later. I tell teachers everyday that they have the most important job in the world but at the same time it is the most rewarding job, not in pay, but in that they touch lives daily.

“I have to mention a few people that have helped me on my journey through education over the past 29 years–Mr. David Sharp, former superintendent, Larry McDonald, former teacher/coach, Mr. Jimmie Radford, former principal/teacher, Mrs. Nancy Smith, former principal/teacher, Mr. John Hurt, former superintendent, Mr. Tim Murley, former superintendent of Warren County schools, my parents Dale and Sue Murphy, my former teachers, my family, wife Jani Murphy, son Jarrett and daughter Erika, who have always been my biggest fans, the community of Cumberland County and last, but not least, the “students” of Cumberland County.

“In closing I want to say thank you to everyone for having faith and trust in me to teach, coach and lead the Cumberland County School System. I only hope to stay involved with our schools in some way because I truly care about our schools and students.”
