observes National Police Week

Albany Mayor Nicky Smith, center, joined with Albany Police Department Chief Ernest Guffey, left, and Assistant Chief Lyle Pierce Monday shortly after Smith had signed a proclamation designating May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week of May 4-10 as Police Week in Albany.

The observance is in conjunction with the observance of National Police Week and National Peace Officer’s Memorial Day.

National Police Week is observed to commemorate law enforcement officres who have rendered a dedicated service to their community, establishing themselves an enviable and enduring reputation for preserving the rights and security of all citizens.

Peace Officers’ Memorial Day honors all law enforcement officers who, through their courageous deeds, have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their community or who have become disabled in the performance of duty.
