Turnovers … by Alan B. Gibson

July 4th traffic was everything I thought it would be

Take some fantastic summer weather and combine it with a holiday that falls on the weekend, and the local traffic and activity just gets kicked up a notch.

That’s pretty much what I predicted in this space last week, and that’s exactly what we had.

Traffic on both lakes was as thick as anyone has seen it in several years and the highways were crowded as well with local traffic combined with the increased tourists travel.

Luckily, at least in this area, we seem to have pulled it off without any major accidents – at least that were reported.

Grab the clubs – the local course is in great shape

While I used to spend a great deal of time on the golf course, I seldom get out there anymore and when I do, it really doesn’t look a lot like golf should look.

Took the urge last week and loaded up the clubs, checked the shoes for spiders and headed out to 76 Falls Country Club after work last Wednesday to take in nine holes before doing some yard work in the cooler portion of the evening.

I’ve always been one to try and pass out some praise when it’s deserved, especially when it’s on the local level and as I made my way around the course, I was pleasantly surprised at just how good of shape things are down there this year.

It wasn’t too many years ago that Jerry Latham bought the abandoned nine-hole course and began the task of trying to get the business back up and running, having to completely start again on the greens and much of the fairways as well.

Jerry and Kelly Grider have done a fantastic job this season and I’ll have to say I can’t remember when I’ve seen things looking so good down there – especially the greens.

Grab the clubs and head out to the local course – if you haven’t been there in awhile, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Couple of changes last week for college sports fans in Kentucky

Couple of big events were held last week in two Kentucky cities when the University of Louisville officially became a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) while the Toppers of Western Kentucky University officially became the latest members of the Conference – USA.

Means a whole new set of opponents for both schools in all sports and for Louisville – already in the upper echelon of college sports, it means an even tougher schedule across the board.

For Western, that move is more challenging especially in the two major sports, football and basketball.

It’s a big step up for both programs, but UL will have no problems. As far as Western goes, I’m still in a “wait and see” mode.
