The list of persons seeking non-partisan seats this year remain minimal but finally did reach the double-digit mark at 10 total candidates with just over a week left before the filing deadline.

Two candidates filed this past week, including one incumbent and one newcomer to politics.

Incumbent fifth district board of education member Goldie Stonecipher filed for re-election on Monday. She is the only candidate in that race thusfar. The district takes in the South Albany and Hayes-Maupin precincts.

Also filing this past week was Joyce Brown Martin, a newcomer who filed for a seat on the Albany City Council. This brings the total to seven candidates for the six seats up for grabs. Of those filing, five are incumbent council members and two are new, first-time candidates.

There remains only one candidate each for Mayor of Albany and first district school board member, which takes in the Nora, Snow and Piney Woods precincts.

As of Monday, August 4, eight of the 10 candidates seeking races on the non-partisan ballots in the city and school board districts were incumbents.

The filing deadline for non-partisan races is next Tuesday, August 12 at 4 p.m. A final listing of candidates will be published in the August 21 issue of the Clinton County News.
