Clinton County’s Relay For Life Committee met Monday night of this week, September 15 at the Early Childhood Center with Adam Smedberg, RFL Central Kentucky Division specialist, and continued to cover a wide variety of issues and events that will be ongoing to raise funds locally for the American Cancer Society’s fight against cancer.

Among the items discussed was the recent kick-off against cancer event sponsored by the CCHS football program and Relay For Life team that recognized local cancer survivors.

Buckets were also passed through the football game crowd to raise funds for the effort with about $150 being collected. Cancer survivors were admitted free to the game and were recognized at halftime.

The group of people who attended the session also discussed a fundraiser for the upcoming Foothills Festival October 17 and 18, and will involve various teams. Booths that will be set up near Albany First Baptist Church will give cancer survivors a chance to register and goody bags will be handed out There will also be a raffle on a $50 gas gift card.

Smedberg also briefly reviewed a recommended new leadership structure on the local level for teams and Relay For Life committee leaders. He also announced the ACS website was now up and running to accept team registrations.

Smedberg touched on goals and planning for the local Relay committee, noting they would go into more detail at the next meeting. The goals include the amount of teams Clinton County would like to have, the amount of money they would expect to raise, the number of known cancer survivors registered, sponsorships and so forth.

Last year, Clinton County had a total of eight teams, down from 11 the previous year and raised $51,000, down from around $70,000 the previous year.

Smedberg did say there would be a few more teams and sponsors this year. Also, it seems the Relay For Life committee is getting a much earlier start and holding more fundraisers overall to help raise team totals, sponsorships and more importantly, the amount of money raised to help cancer research and aid those persons who have the disease.

The actual Relay For Life event will be held next spring and will have a carnival type theme, but in between, all the teams involved will be hosting a wide variety of events and fundraising activities, with once again, the schools being heavily involved.

The next meeting of the Relay For Life committee and team captains is scheduled for October 6 at 5:30 p.m. at the Early Childhood Center.
