Rough night for our Dawgs

The Bulldogs had a disappointing night this past Friday on Bulldog Field, giving up an eventual 26-8 loss at the hands of the Caverna Colonels. That loss sends the Bulldogs into Friday night’s game with a 3-2 record against the Metcalfe County Hornets, which enter the contest with a 1-4 record.

Kick-off for Friday night’s contest will be at 7:00 p.m., with the gates set to open at about 5:30 p.m.

With the season now at the half-way point, this week’s upcoming game will be the last of a five game home stand for the Bulldogs as the next two outings will take Clinton County on the road for games against Lynn Camp then Red Boiling Springs on October 3 and October 10, respectively.

The Bulldogs, after an idle date on October 17, will play a final home game on October 24 against Clay County (Tennessee) with the last contest of the season being a road trip on October 31 to Jackson County, Kentucky.

Wall of Fame nominees confirmed

Although we’re just barely into the fall season (less than 12 hours as I write this week’s column), it’s always good to be thinking ahead, and in this part of the country, thinking ahead usually means thinking about basketball.

Along those lines, the annual Meet the Bulldogs event has been scheduled for Friday, November 14 and of course that night will include the annual induction of the newest members onto the Basketball Wall of Fame.

The selection committee tends to flip-flop on making member selections as far as players from the modern era or “old school” era goes, and last year’s selections all involved the latter.

Both of this year’s inductees are modern era players and both are very well deserved.

From the girls nominees, the committee has selected Rachel Matthews, graduate of the 2002 class. Rachel, who was known more for her defensive skills than for her offensive skills, has a host of accomplishments to her credit, but it was Rachel who was most often assigned to guard the opposing team’s best scorer. She usually tackled – sometimes literally – that task with tremendous success.

The boys’ WOF representative this time around is Charlie Stearns, who played from the 2001-02 season through his senior season, 2004-2005.

Charlie also has a host of accolades that set his career as a Bulldog out from the others, and like Rachel, many of his records were on the defensive end of the court as well as the offensive end.

Of course, we’ll get into the details of these two newest Wall of Fame members as we get closer to the induction ceremony and Meet the Bulldogs event – but for now, congratulations on these two much deserving new WOF members.

Basketball reunion rescheduled

As I mentioned last week, the South Central Kentucky High School Basketball Reunion that had been planned for this past weekend, was post-poned and rescheduled for Saturday, October 25.

In an email last week, organizer Charlie Hunter told me that there were simply too many conflicts with other events and the decision was made to move the date of the event, as well as shorten the planned agenda to a single day/night rather than a two-day evert as had been originally planned.

As of now, Charlie has noted that the reunion will get underway at Beaver Trail Park at 11:00 a.m. with a host of “fun day” plans that will include live music, a DJ session of party rock music and an area with food vendors that will allow those attending to mill around and visit with others. That portion of the day will conclude at 4:00 p.m. when things move to Barren County High School later that evening.

A reception will begin at 6:00, followed by a dinner at 7:00 and finally a final program and awards ceremony at 8:00 p.m. Attire was suggested for the evening events as semi-formal.

Banquet cost for adults is $20 and additional details can be learned by contacting the organizers at P.O. Box 1763, Glasgow, KY 42142.

Registration deadline is October 11.
