The Clinton County Bulldogs finished its season last week with a trip to Jackson County on Thursday night that ended in a 60-22 loss. Clinton County finished the season with a 3-7 record.
Head Coach Jamie Miller said that wasn’t the game he wanted to end the season on.
“We had six starters out by the second half. During the first half they jumped out on us 20-0, but we made it respectable and closed it to 26-22,” Miller said. “Then it just totally went away. We’ve had some problems tackling this year. There are some things we are going to have to revisit a great deal in the off season.”
Miller said it is frustrating to him when the little things bring a team down. He said he was making all the right defensive calls, but there were a lot of missed tackles and that allows the other teams to gain yardage.
“In a way, fundamentals is a part of it,” Miller said. “We’ve got some guys who can really hit hard and have punishing hits. I think they are looking for the big hit instead of the secure tackle. That’s not necessary the most effective way.”
With the 2014 season over, Miller has no choice but to look to next year. He said he will give his team two weeks off with no football, then have voluntary days to weight lift until the end of school, then hit it hard during the summer months to prepare for next season.
“It’s unfortunate our three seniors won’t be apart of it, and it’s a shame they had to go out like that,” Miller said. “The younger guys will bounce back, they always do and they will be ready to go.”
Clinton County graduates three seniors, Cole Nelson, Zach Jones and Lucas Gibson. Clinton County will also lose its team athletic trainer Carley Miller to graduation.
“It will be hard to replace Cole at tight end, and Zach Jones on the line,” Miller said. “Never has it been done in the history, that I can remember, have three punt returns for touchdowns in one season as Lucas Gibson did. Those are going to be tough shoes to fill. I feel pretty good about the upcoming years. We will have a lot of experience next year.”
