It’s time for Kentucky’s young people to exercise their financial creativity by entering the Piggy Bank Design Contest.

The University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Food and Environment and its Managing in Tough Times Initiative host the contest every fall in anticipation of Kentucky Saves Week, a time in February dedicated to encouraging individuals to start or increase their personal savings. Kentucky Saves Week 2015 is February 23-28.

Any school-age student in Kentucky can enter the Piggy Bank Design Contest at their county UK Cooperative Extension office. While the contest gives students the opportunity to think creatively, it also affords them with the chance to think about ways to build wealth and reduce debt.

Each of the state’s seven extension districts will choose two winning entries based on originality, creativity, artistic design and attractiveness. Winning designs will be displayed in the Capitol Rotunda in Frankfort during February. Winners will also receive a certificate.

Contest deadlines vary by county. The Clinton County deadline is December 2nd. The county winner will be determined by a penny vote competition during Christmas Village on December 5th from 5:00-7:30 p.m. at the Learning Center.

Entries must meet the following requirements to be eligible for judging:

a. The bank cannot exceed 12 inches X 12 inches X 12 inches (1 square foot)

b. Piggy banks must be able to hold coins (i.e., include a slot that has been cut to insert coins).

c. Piggy banks must be created or decorated by the youth contestant.

d. Plastic or ceramic piggy banks may be used, but must be personally decorated.

e. Piggy banks DO NOT have to be in the shape of a pig.

f. You MAY use or repurpose other containers.

Entry forms and more information are available at the Clinton County office of the UK Cooperative Extension Service.

A positive approach

to dementia caregiving

Our community is aging and that trend is projected to continue over the next few years. Sometimes with age, everyday activities such as shopping, cooking and taking care of a home or oneself becomes increasingly challenging and care from other family members is needed. When memory loss and brain disorders are present, those tasks can become even more challenging. Providing care for an individual with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia can be challenging and, at times, overwhelming.

As one of America’s leading educators on dementia, Teepa Snow provides training sessions to caregivers and healthcare professionals throughout the country. Teepa has made it her personal mission to help families and professionals better understand how it feels to be living with such challenges and seeks to change and improve life for everyone involved.

We welcome you to join us for a live-stream presentation (via the TV/computer) from the University of Kentucky campus with Teepa Snow on Tuesday, November 18th at the Clinton County Cooperative Extension Office (2601 North Hwy 127). The afternoon will offer the following sessions:

12:00 p.m. – 12:45 p.m. Coping with Challenging Behaviors

1:00 p.m. – 1:45 p.m. How to Communicate with Someone with Dementia

2:00 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. How to Enjoy the Holidays When

Dementia is Part of the Picture

Participants will have the chance to chat and ask questions electronically. You may chose the session that most interests you or join us for the entire afternoon. The event is free and light refreshments will be provided. To register, please call the Extension Office at (606) 387-5404 or email christy.nuetzman@uky.edu. As we think about aging family members and caregiving, preparing yourself, understanding your loved one’s experience, and seeking support from others can help you succeed on the caregiving journey. Join us to learn more on Tuesday, November 18th.
