Lady Dawgs only undefeated team in 4th Region

The Clinton County Lady Dawgs are the only undefeated team in the 4th Region with a record of 6-0 after defeating Monroe County Tuesday, 61-49, Metcalfe County Friday, 70-37 and Greenwood Saturday, 68-65.

Saturday, the Lady Bulldogs traveled to Bowling Green to take on the Lady Gators of Greenwood High School.

At the end of the first quarter, Clinton County was tied with Greenwood at 14 each.

As the second quarter got underway, Clinton County outscored the Lady Gators by four points, 18-14 to take a 32-38 halftime lead.

During the second half, the Lady Dawgs continued to remain in control of the game, putting up 17 points to Greenwood’s 14 for a seven point lead, 49-42.

Clinton County’s three quarter lead was enough to hold off the Lady Gators in the end as the Lady Dawgs put up 19 fourth quarter points. Greenwood outscored Clinton County in the final quarter by putting 23 points on the board, however, it wasn’t enough to take the win away from the Lady Dawgs, 68-65.

The Lady Dawgs shot 48 percent from the floor, including one of nine from the three point line.

From the foul line, Clinton County hit 23 of 30 for 70 percent.

Ansley Stalcup finished the game with a double-double, including 28 points and 12 rebounds.

Also in double figures in scoring was Kayla Dicken with 13 points on the game.

With the win Saturday, the Lady Dawgs secured the best record in the 4th Region at 6-0 on the year.

On Friday night, Clinton County hosted Metcalfe County in the first district matchup of the season.

The Lady Dawgs started out slow in the first quarter, scoring only 11 points to Metcalfe County’s six, but that would soon change as the second quarter got underway.

The Lady Dawgs quickly got into a rhythm and didn’t look back until the buzzer sounded.

During the second quarter, the Lady Dawgs put up 23 points to Metcalfe’s 14 for a 14 point lead at the half, 34-20.

In the first three minutes of the second half, Clinton County put together a 15-2 run to extend its lead to 25 points, 47-22. Metcalfe County scored a basket at the five minute mark for it’s second basket of the second half, but Clinton County then put together a 12-0 run for a 59-24 lead with three minutes remaining in the quarter.

Metcalfe County finished the quarter with only six points total while the Lady Dawgs posted 25 points for a 59-26 lead.

The final quarter went much the same way as Clinton County coasted to the end. The Dawgs scored 11 points in the final period, compared to Metcalfe’s 11 points. Clinton County’s fifth win of the season came with the 33 point victory over Metcalfe County, 70-37.

The Clinton County Lady Dawgs defeated Monroe County Tuesday night, in a game that was a battle to the end.

The Lady Dawgs opened up with a 5-0 start, but a 7-0 run by the Lady Falcons saw Clinton County down by two points with 4:50 remaining in the first quarter.

The score went back and forth for several minutes until Stalcup took the lead, 14-13 at the 2:31 mark, followed by a basket by back-to-back baskets by Joelie Hicks for an 18-13 lead.

Monroe County answered with a basket with 26 seconds remaining in the quarter, but Stalcup finished the period with a field goal to lead Monroe after one, 20-15.

During the second quarter, Clinton County’s defense was just as strong as its offense as the Lady Dawgs held Monroe County to only six points for the period.

Clinton County’s 16-6 run during the second quarter gave the Lady Dawgs the confidence it needed to hold off the Lady Falcons during the second half with a 36-21 halftime lead.

Coming off the bench for Clinton County was eighth grader Hicks to lead Clinton County in scoring during the first half with 11 points. She would finish with 18 for the game.

Monroe County did show some life in the second half, outscoring Clinton County 18-12 during the third quarter, but Clinton County never backed down from the Lady Falcons.

After three periods, the Lady Dawgs continued to maintain a nine point lead, 48-39.

During the final quarter, it took nearly two and a half minutes before either team would score. Monroe County cut the lead to six points, 48-42, before Clinton County’s Stalcup scored a field goal at the 4:10 mark for a 50-42 lead.

Monroe County continued to show life, but the will of Clinton County was too strong.

With a minute remaining, Clinton County reached a 10 point lead, 57-47. Bree Boils hit seven of eight free throws in the final stretch to secure the win, 61-49.

Clinton County’s next game was Tuesday, too late for press deadline, against Cumberland County at Lindle Castle Gymnasium. Clinton County will travel to Seneca for a pre-Christmas Tournament with the first game on Thursday, December 18 against Estill County. Tip off for that game will be 7:30 p.m. Other games for that tournament are yet to be determined as far as opponents and times are concerned, however, the Lady Dawgs are scheduled to play Friday and Saturday, December 19 and 20, in the Lady Redhawk Classic.

Head Coach Darrell Thompson talked with his team last week during a time out. The Lady Dawgs are 6-0 on the year and as of press deadline, are the only undefeated team in the fourth region.

Eighth grader Joelie Hicks came off the bench against Monroe County and led the Lady Dawgs in scoring with 18 points on the game.
