Dawgs pick up two wins, one loss

The Clinton County Bulldogs improved its record this week with two wins against Greenwood on Saturday, 62-55 and Metcalfe County Friday night, 82-35.

On Tuesday night, Clinton County hosted Monroe County in what turned out to be a battle to the final buzzer, and saw Clinton County pick up its second loss of the season, 60-58.

Clinton County traveled to Bowling Green on Saturday to take on 4th Region opponent Greenwood. The Dawgs struggled in the first quarter, but managed to outscore the Gators 15-10 for the five point advantage.

During the second quarter, the Dawgs outscored Greenwood by one, 15-14, to take a 30-24 lead into the locker room at the half.

During the third quarter, Clinton County continued to maintain control of the game, outscoring Greenwood 14-8, however, the Dawgs seemed to be lacking in the offense department.

With Clinton County up by 12 points at the start of the fourth quarter, 44-38, Greenwood started working to catchup to the Dawgs.

The Gators outscored Clinton County in the final period, 23-18, but Clinton County’s final 10 points came from the foul line as Clinton County held on to the win, 62-55.

Clinton County moved to 4-2 on the year with the win at Greenwood.

The Dawgs picked up win number three on the year at home Friday night as 16th District opponent Metcalfe County came into the Castle.

Clinton County jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead against Metcalfe County. The Hornets’ first two baskets came at the 3:24 and 2:10 mark, both being three pointers.

Metcalfe County would only score two more points in the quarter as Clinton County put up a total of 23 during the first period to lead, 23-8.

The second quarter went much as did the first, as the Dawgs put up 24 points compared to Metcalfe County’s 14, for a 47-22 halftime lead.

During the third quarter, Clinton County reached a 35 point lead when Chase Anderson hit his second of two foul shots with 2:24 on the clock.

The quarter ended with the Dawgs in complete control, 66-31.

During the final quarter, Clinton County cleared the bench allowing some of the younger players to get some game minutes.

Clinton County’s bench put up 25 of the 82 points scored in the game and held Metcalfe County to only four points in the final period for an 82-31 win.

The Clinton County Bulldogs hosted Monroe County on Tuesday night of last week in what ended up being a close game, however, Clinton County couldn’t find a way to pull out the win as the Dawgs were defeated, 60-58.

In the first quarter, Clinton County struggled from the floor as Monroe County opened up to a 9-2 lead.

The Dawgs found a little rhythm and scored back-to-back baskets to cut the lead to three points, 9-6, but Monroe County scored five straight for a 14-6 lead with 1:43 on the clock in the first quarter.

Both teams finished the quarter with one point each for a 15-7 first quarter score.

During the second quarter, Clinton County continued to struggle from the floor.

Monroe County swapped baskets with the Dawgs for several minutes, maintaining a four to five point lead for much of the period.

Clinton County outscored the Falcons 11-9 in the period, however, Monroe County maintained the lead at the half, 24-18.

The third quarter went much as the first two did with Monroe County grabbing a 12 point lead late in the third, 42-30. During the final two minutes, Clinton County managed to put together a 8-4 run to cut Monroe’s lead to six points at the end of the period, 44-38.

During the fourth quarter, Clinton County climbed back into the game and with under a minute remaining, Claywell hit a three pointer to cut the lead to two points, 56-54.

On the next trip down the floor, Monroe County went to the foul line with 27 seconds on the clock, knocking down two of two for a four point edge, 58-54.

With 16 seconds on the clock, sixth man off the bench Glen England made a three pointer from the left wing to cut the lead to one point, 58-57.

With time winding down, Monroe was sent to the line where only one of two was hit for a two point edge, 59-57.

A missed three point attempt by Elidjah Anderson resulted in a Monroe County foul that sent Claywell to the line. Claywell hit one of two to cut the lead to one point, 59-58.

A quick foul with 3.7 seconds remaining sent Monroe back to the line for two shots. After missing the first and hitting the second free throw, Clinton County inbounded the ball with just shy of four seconds to get a shot off, however, the ball was stripped at the last second and Clinton County was unable to take a shot to win the game. Clinton County picked up its second loss of the season, 60-58.

Clinton County was back in action Tuesday night at home, too late for press deadline, against Cumberland County.

The Dawgs will also play host for the Twin Lakes Holiday Classic this week starting Thursday and running until Sunday.

Clinton County’s first game will come on Friday, December 19 against Metcalfe County at 5 p.m., followed by another game at 8:15 p.m. against Western.

On Saturday, Clinton County will face Perry County Central at 6:15 and Elliott County on Sunday, December 21, at 2:30 p.m.
