Dawgs pick up runners-up in Twin Lakes Holiday Classic

The Bulldogs earned runners-up honors in the Twin Lakes Holiday Classic by finishing the tournament 3-1 which put the team at 8-3 on the year.

Sunday afternoon, Clinton County took on Elliott County in a game which saw the Bulldogs take control early and maintain control throughout the game.

In the first quarter, Lance Claywell drew first blood with a three pointer, followed by Colin Langford with two fouls shots for a 5-0 start.

Elliott County hit a three pointer to cut the lead to two points, but a basket by Ethan Smith and another three pointer by Claywell gave the Dawgs a 10-5 on a 5-2 run.

Elliott County wouldn’t go away for good in the first quarter, hitting a three pointer to cut the lead to two points, 10-8 with 2:30 on the clock.

Clinton County extended the lead just before the quarter ended with a basket by Smith and a free throw by Chance McWhorter, 13-8.

During the second quarter, the Dawgs saw it’s lead cut to three points on a field goal by Elliott County, but Clinton County put together a 5-0 run to extend its lead to eight points, 18-10.

A three pointer by Elliott County at the 6:15 mark cut the Dawgs’ lead, but back-to-back baskets by Claywell put the Dawgs up by nine points, 22-13, with more than half the quarter remaining before halftime.

Clinton County continued to add points to the board while keeping Elliott County at bay somewhat. The Dawgs finished the quarter by putting up 16 points while Elliott County put up 13 for a 38-26 halftime lead.

The third quarter saw Clinton County with the same determination as in the first half and outscored Elliott County 15-13 for a 58-39 lead.

During the final quarter, the Dawgs continued to dominate the offensive end allowing Elliott County two free throws to start the quarter, then putting together a 7-0 run for a 60-41 lead with 5:14 remaining in the game.

Elliott County could never get to within reach of the Dawgs’ lead for the remainder of the game as Clinton County pulled out its third win of the Twin Lakes Holiday Classic and runners-up honors with a 3-1 record.

Perry County Central 78

The third game of the Twin Lakes Holiday Classic for the Dawgs came with a disappointing ending for Clinton County Saturday afternoon.

Perry County Central, eventually taking first place in the tournament, defeated the Dawgs 78-67.

It wasn’t good from the tip for Clinton County as Perry County Central’s guard Braxton Beverly put on a shooting clinic against the Dawgs. Beverly scored 28 first half points and finished the game with 46 points.

Perry County scored first in the first 30 seconds of the game for a quick 2-0 lead. Smith followed for the Dawgs with a three pointer from the corner to give the Dawgs a one point edge, 3-2. Perry County quickly took back the lead on a field goal, but Dalton hit one of two from the line to tie the score at four with 6:35 on the clock.

Perry County then put together a 12-3 run on the Dawgs which lasted until the 3:45 mark in the first quarter for a 16-7 lead.

Claywell knocked down a field goal to cut the lead to seven points, 16-9, but Perry County added four points to the board for a 22-9 lead with 30 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Dalton finished up the quarter with a field goal to trail, 22-11.

To start the second quarter, Smith made a three pointer to cut into Perry County’s lead, 22-14, but Perry County made a field goal and a three pointer to move ahead, 27-14.

For the remainder of the half, Clinton County continued to battle and cut the lead to 10 points with a 6-1 run to close out the half, 47-37.

The Dawgs never could get back into the game as much as they fought for a chance to get to within arms length on the scoreboard.

Perry County was much too strong early in the game, causing Clinton County to play catchup during the second half.

Clinton County finished the third quarter trailing 63-49.

As the fourth quarter got underway, Clinton County matched Perry County for the first several minutes. Every time Clinton County would get to within nine points, Perry County would score and extend its lead away from the Dawgs’ reach.

As the final minutes ticked away, Perry County extended its lead and came out with the 78-67 win.

For the second game of the Twin Lakes Holiday Classic held at Clinton County High School on Friday night, the Dawgs took on Western High School in what turned out to be one of the better performances by the Dawgs picking up the 21 point win, 59-38.

It took a small amount of time for Clinton County to get on the board, but did so with 6:41 on the clock in the first quarter as Dalton hit a field goal for a 2-0 lead.

Western answered with a three pointer to take the lead, 3-2, but a 6-0 run by the Dawgs gave Clinton County an 8-3 advantage with 3:50 on the clock.

Western came back and tied the score at eight all, but Dalton hit a field goal to push the Dawgs back up two points, 10-8.

Smith hit one of two from the line to extend the lead to three points, but Western hit two free throws with 49 seconds on the clock to cut the lead to one point, 11-10. A basket by Dalton and two free throws would close out the quarter with a 15-10 lead for the Dawgs.

During the second quarter, Clinton County continued to follow the game plan and it pretty much sealed the deal for the Dawgs, putting up 16 second quarter points to Western’s 11 for a 31-21 halftime lead.

During the second half, Clinton County remained in control of the game.

Only putting up 14 points in the third quarter, Clinton County extended its lead with defense by holding Western to only eight points for the eight minute period, 45-29.

Defense was also strong in the fourth quarter, allowing Western to score nine points during the period, while Clinton County put up 14 for the final period.

Clinton County’s win over Western, 59-38, was the second win of the tournament for the Dawgs.

Clinton County faced district opponent Metcalfe County in the first game of the Twin Lakes Holiday Classic Friday afternoon.

The Dawgs opened up on a hot streak and never let Metcalfe in the game. After the first quarter, Clinton County led 26-9, and the second quarter saw many of the younger Dawgs get some quality playing time in order to give the upperclassmen a breather.

During the second quarter, Clinton County was outscored by the Hornets, 15-14 for a halftime score of 40-24, with the Dawgs still in control. Dalton hit a three pointer at the buzzer to give the Dawgs a small boost heading into the second half.

As the second half got underway, Clinton County continued to dominate and extended its lead by putting up 16 points to Metcalfe County’s 12, 56-26.

In the final quarter, Clinton County’s defense spoke louder than the 18 points it put up on offense as the Dawgs held Metcalfe County to only five points in the final eight minutes of play.

Clinton County’s first game of the tournament came out with a W, 74-41.

The Dawgs will have a break until after Christmas when the team will travel to Montgomery County to take on Mason County in the opening game of the Gateway Holiday Classic on Saturday, December 27.

Cumberland County 46

The Clinton County Bulldogs moved to 2-0 in district play Tuesday night as Cumberland County came to The Castle.

It didn’t take long for the Dawgs to take control of the game. Three baskets in and Clinton County was leading 6-0 before Cumberland County would score. Cumberland County’s baskets were few and far between as Clinton County continued to put points on the board, leading after the first quarter, 18-9.

During the second quarter, the Dawgs continued to show dominance, putting together a 12-4 run to lead 30-12.

Even though Clinton County held a commanding lead, offensively the team was off just a little. Lance Claywell had a difficult time finding his rhythm behind the three point line, missing two, as did Keifer Dalton and Ethan Smith, also missing two each.

Smith went two of four from three point land during the first half and finished the half with 15 points.

Clinton County led at the half, 42-27.

The second half went much like the first as Clinton County continued to dominate and control the game.

The pace of the game picked up somewhat in the second half as Clinton County was able to get steals for easy baskets off turnovers.

At the end of the third, Clinton County was up 60-33 and showed no signs of backing off.

Six minutes into the fourth quarter, the Dawgs grabbed its biggest lead of the game. At the 1:59 mark, Michael Collins hit a free throw to put the Dawgs up by 35 points, which would be the final point Clinton County would score.

The Dawgs got the W for the game and moved to 5-2 with the 75-46 win.
