Lady Bulldogs bring home championship trophy, claim to program’s best start ever
The Clinton County Lady Bulldogs made it through the 2014 portion of this basketball season with a perfect 10-0 record and a championship win in the Louisville Seneca Lady Redhawk Classic this past weekend.
According to records, 10-0 is the best start to a season in Clinton County Lady Bulldog history.
Two previous teams started out 9-0 and lost its next game game of the season. Those teams were the 2000-2001 and 2003-2004 teams.
Clinton County went into the tournament with a 7-0 record and managed to pull out three consecutive wins to bring the championship trophy home.
Head Coach Darrell Thompson said his girls are hearing all the talk about the record, but it’s something they, as a team, never talk about.
“Yeah they know they are 10-0 and I’m sure they are hearing people talk, but that’s something they don’t talk about as a team,” Thompson said. “That’s one of the best things about this team. I was going to give them off a couple days this week and they told me they didn’t want to take off right now.”
Thompson said the team chemistry is unreal with this year’s squad. According to Thompson, they don’t care who scores or who plays the most, as long as they win as a team.
“We thought we would have a decent record, but as far as being 10-0, we didn’t think we would be at that point,” Thompson said. “I knew we were going to go through some growing pains. We are turning into a good basketball team and we are getting some lucky breaks.”
As the Lady Dawgs prepare for the Best of the Lakes Holiday Classic after Christmas, Clinton County has a chance to continue its unbeaten record through the end of 2014.
“The team-first attitude is unbelievable with these girls. They want to do everything as a team,” Thompson said. “It helps when they want to be in the gym.”
Clinton County’s tournament will begin Friday night with a game against Metcalfe County at 8 p.m., followed by two games on Saturday, December 27 against Red Boiling Springs, Tenn., and West Jessamine at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. respectively. The Lady Dawgs will also play Sunday afternoon, December 28, at 4 p.m. against Wayne County to close out the holiday tournament.
