Win Best of Lakes Holiday Classic against Wayne County

The Clinton County Lady Bulldogs stayed at home this week and hosted the Best of the Lakes Holiday Classic at Clinton County High School with five teams competing in the tournament.

The Lady Bulldogs can ring in the new year with an undefeated 14-0 record with its recent win against Wayne County in the Best of the Lakes Holiday Classic Championship game Sunday afternoon.

Wayne County came out strong against the Lady Dawgs on a three point play, 3-0.

Clinton County’s Bree Boils knocked down two from the foul line to cut the lead to one, but a free throw by the Lady Cardinals pushed Wayne County’s lead to two points, 4-2, two minutes into the game.

The Lady Dawgs answered with a free throw and a field goal by Ansley Stalcup to take the lead, 5-4.

Wayne County regained the lead on a field goal at the 5:04 mark, but a 5-0 run by the Lady Dawgs, including a basket by Stalcup and a three pointer by eighth grader Joelie Hicks resulted in a four point lead, 10-6.

It was evident in the first quarter these two teams were going to make a game out of it and with the first quarter ending, the Lady Dawgs were ahead by a narrow margin, 14-10.

The second quarter was a defensive battle for both teams as Clinton County struggled to put points on the board.

The Lady Dawgs did well in the early part of the period, reaching an eight point lead with 5:05 on the clock, 20-12, but a surge by the Lady Cardinals saw that lead dwindle fast.

Wayne County cut the lead to one point within a couple minutes, 20-19, but a three point play by Kayla Dicken gave the Lady Dawgs a four point lead with 1:45 on the clock.

Wayne County hit two from the foul line at 1:24 to cut the lead to two, but a field goal by Stalcup put the Lady Dawgs back up by four points, 25-21 with more than a minute before halftime.

Wayne County scored with 55 seconds on the clock and had a chance to take the lead just before the buzzer sounded at the end of the second period, however, Clinton County’s defense was too much for the Lady Cards in the first half as Clinton County headed into the locker room at halftime with a one point advantage, 25-24.

The Lady Dawgs drew first blood in the second half with a steal and a basket by Hicks, 27-24.

Wayne County again cut the lead to one point on a field goal, but Clinton County’s Macy Campbell hit a field goal for a three point cushion with 6:21 remaining in the third quarter, 29-26.

Both teams played hard during the third quarter with the Lady Dawgs putting just a little more effort on the court. Wayne County couldn’t push over the hump and never took the lead in the third quarter as Clinton County ended the period with a six point lead, 39-33.

The Lady Dawgs added to its lead early in the fourth quarter with a 5-2 run for a nine point advantage, 44-35 with 6:35 on the clock.

Wayne County started chipping away at the Lady Dawgs’ lead, getting to within three points at the 4:30 mark, 46-43, but Campbell hit a field goal and two free throws to put the Lady Dawgs up by seven with 2:07 remaining in the game.

Wayne County shot the ball extremely well from the foul line down the stretch and hit four in a row to cut the lead to three points with 1:32 remaining.

With 50 seconds on the clock, Wayne County got a steal and drove down to get fouled, sending the Lady Cards to the line. Wayne County hit two to cut the lead to one point, 50-49.

With seconds winding down, Hicks drives the basketball through the middle of the defense to find a wide open look at a layup. As the shot went up and in, Hicks was fouled, sending her to the line for one. Hicks dropped the free throw in for a four point lead, 53-49.

On Wayne County’s final possession, the ball was driven into the lane where Boils stepped in and took a charge with seven seconds on the clock to secure the win for the Lady Dawgs.

Clinton County inbounded the ball and as time ran out, the Lady Dawgs got the win and moved to 14-0 on the season.

The Clinton County Lady Dawgs improved its record to 13-0 Saturday night by defeating the Lady Colts, 48-35.

The game started out being a touch battle for Clinton County as both teams were neck and neck during the first period.

Clinton County turned on the defense and held the Lady Colts scoreless during the final three mintues of the period in order to take a one point lead at the end of the first eight minutes, 11-10.

During the second quarter, Clinton County’s defense continued to shine as the Lady Dawgs held West Jessamine to minimal points, while going on a run to secure the lead.

West Jessamine tied the score at 13 after Ansley Stalcup scored to put the Lady Dawgs up by three, 13-10.

An 8-0 run by the Lady Dawgs gave Clinton County a small cushion during the second quarter and according to Head Coach Darrell Thompson, the game was won during the second quarter on the strong defense and energy the Lady Dawgs displayed.

West Jessamine didn’t score again until the two minute mark in the second quarter and by that time, Clinton County had readched a six point lead, 21-15.

Clinton County finished the quarter with two more field goals for a 10 point advantage heading into the second half, 25-15.

As the third quarter got underway, Clinton County continued to shine on both ends of the floor.

The Lady Dawgs nearly matched West Jessamine point for point during the third quarter and led by 11 points at the end of the period, 35-24.

During the first two minutes of the fourth quarter, Clinton County held West Jessamine scoreless again while adding nine points to the board for a 20 lead, 44-24.

West Jessamine finally scored with 5:40 on the clock and hit one of two from the line to cut the lead to 17 points, 44-27.

Sophomore Allie Hopper scored at the five minute mark to extend the lead, 46-27, but a three pointer by West Jessamine cut into that lead with half the period still to play.

Both teams were scoreless from that point until the 1:58 mark when eighth grader Joelie Hicks made two shots from the foul line for an 18 point cushion, 48-30.

West Jessamine would finish the game by scoring five points, but the damage had already been done for the Lady Colts as Clinton County escaped with the victory, 48-35.

Red Boiling Springs 41

The second game in the Best of the Lakes Holiday Classic saw Clinton County taking on Red Boiling Springs for Clinton County’s first of two games Saturday.

The Lady Dawgs went to 12-0 with the 57-41 victory.

At the beginning of the game, Red Boiling Springs drew first blood with a field goal and that would be it for the visiting team as Clinton County put together a 19-0 run to finish the quarter, 19-2.

Red Boiling Springs scored first in the second quarter, followed by a free throw by Allie Hopper and two from Hicks, 22-4.

The rest of the half, Red Boiling Springs would play catch up and got to within 10 at the half, 29-19.

The third quarter saw Clinton County struggling from the field. The Lady Dawgs were maintaining its lead, however, they were putting Red Boiling Springs away like they should have.

At the end of the third, Clinton County was up by 12 points, 40-28.

The fourth quarter went much the same way as the third with Clinton County keeping Red Boiling Springs at bay. The Lady Dawgs outscored Red Boiling Springs 17-13 in the final period to grab the 57-41 victory.

The Lady Dawgs opened up its tournament with a game against district opponent Metcalfe County.

Clinton County defeated the Lady Hornets during its first meeting of the season on December 12 at the Castle, 70-37.

Metcalfe County has improved somewhat since the team’s first meeting, grabbing a 6-2 lead to start the game.

That was all it took for Clinton County to kick it into high gear as the Lady Dawgs put together a 30-0 run that lasted well into the second quarter, 32-6.

Metcalfe County didn’t score again until the 2:29 mark in the second quarter. By the end of the half, Clinton County had scored five more points and Metcalfe put up six for a 35-14 halftime score.

During the third quarter, Clinton County coasted somewhat, but was outscored by two points, 17-15 in the quarter by the Lady Hornets.

With a 50-31 lead at the end of three, Clinton County completely coasted in the final period, with all players making it to the floor during the game.

The Lady Dawgs picked up its 11th win of the season, 62-48.

During the tournament, players of the game awards were given out. Of the four games Clinton County played, Stalcup was awarded two, Dicken one and Hicks was named player of the game against Wayne County.

The next match up for the Lady Dawgs will come Saturday, January 3, as Clinton County will travel to Russell County for the first of a two game double-header with the boys’ team.

The Lady Dawgs are scheduled for tip off at 6 p.m.

Joelie Hicks made a steal at the beginning of the third quarter and ran it down for a layup against Wayne County in the final game of the Best of the Lakes Holiday Classic. Hicks finished the game with nine points and Player of the Game honors.

Allie Hopper went up for a shot during Clinton County’s first game in the Best of the Lakes Holiday Classic against Metcalfe County. The Lady Dawgs remain undefeated by winning its own tournament.

Ansley Stalcup made a short jumper from the free throw line during last week’s Best of the Lakes Holiday Classic.

Kayla Dicken put up a shot against Metcalfe County Friday night. Dicken finished the game with 13 points.
