The Clinton County Lady Bulldogs continue on the winning path and with Saturday night’s, 56-50 win against Russell County, the Lady Dawgs are now at the 15-0 mark of the season.
In order to grab the team’s 15th win, the Lady Dawgs had to come from behind and take control of the game late in the contest in order to secure the win.
The Lady Dawgs started the game with a basket by leading scorer, Ansley Stalcup. Both teams struggled early on in the contest with Russell County tying the score at two with 4:55 on the clock.
A free throw by Kayla Dicken with 4:28 remaining in the first quarter gave Clinton County a one point lead, 3-2, however, a basket by Russell County gave the Lady Lakers a one point lead with 3:47 on the clock, 4-3.
Both teams fought on offense and finished the quarter with the Lady Dawgs trailing by two points, 10-8.
The second quarter seemed more difficult for Clinton County as shots continued to not fall for the Lady Dawgs.
For most of the period, Russell County stayed ahead of the Lady Dawgs by five plus points, and even reached a seven point lead with 3:32 remaining in the half, 21-14.
Clinton County’s struggling offense gave Russell County the confidence in the first half to maintain it’s lead. As the seconds were winding down in the first half, Stalcup hit a two pointer to cut the lead to five points at the half, 30-25.
During the first four minutes of the third quarter, Clinton County put together a 9-5 run to trail by one point, 35-34. Russell County extended its lead with two baskets and a free throw for a six point advantage, 40-34, with 3:14 on the clock.
Clinton County then went to work and cut the lead to two as the quarter ended, 40-38. Clinton County didn’t stop there as the Lady Dawgs took its first lead since the first quarter with 7:41 on the clock in the fourth quarter, 41-40.
Russell County regained the lead on a field goal, but a free throw by Allie Hopper tied the score at 42 with 6:40 remaining in the game.
Russell County jumped out to a three point lead on a field goal and a free throw, 45-42, with 4:57 on the clock.
Clinton County’s Dicken then went to work on the offensive end, scoring Clinton County’s next eight points to give the Lady Dawgs a five point lead, 50-45 with 1:49 remaining.
Russell County managed to cut the lead to one point with 42 seconds left, 50-49, but four free throws by Stalcup gave Clinton County a five point lead, 54-49 with 22 seconds remaining.
Russell County hit one free throw to finish out the game, but Clinton County’s Dicken hit a field goal to give Clinton County its largest lead of the game and the win, 56-50.
Clinton County hit 18 of 49 from the floor for 36.7 percent, compared to Russell County’s 19 of 45 for 42.2 percent.
From the free throw line, Clinton County was 78.9 percent on 15 of 19.

Clinton County played Tuesday night at Clinton County High School as the Pickett County Lady Bobcats came to town. Game highlights and photos will be published in next week’s edition.
Also up next for the Lady Dawgs will be an away game at Metcalfe County Friday and a game against Perry County Central on Saturday at Russell County in the Bankers Classic.

Kayla Dicken spun around a defender to make this fall away jumper late in the second half. Clinton County won the contest, 56-50, and improved its record to 15-0. Dicken finished the game with 13 points.
Ansley Stalcup led all scoring Saturday night with 26 points in the Lady Dawgs’ 15 straight win of the season. The Lady Dawgs hosted Pickett County Tuesday night, too late for press deadline, and will travel to Metcalfe County Friday night.
