To the Editor,

Since Little Jimmy Dickens passed away January 2, 2015, I thought some Clinton County folks might enjoy reading about part of my life in my earlier years. He had a radio show on WSM Radio Station in Nashville, Tennessee and joined his fan club in the early 50s. He sent me a post card.

I also belonged and have cards from Carl Smith, Web Pierce, and Hank Thompson fan clubs.

My parents were Harrison and Cinda Byrd. We didn’t have electricity then but a battery radio. Dad and Mom sold eggs and live chickens to buy a battery which cost $7.00. That was a lot of money then.

I had two brothers in the U.S. Army then. Bill was overseas and Elmer was sent to several bases but stayed in the USA. They both returned safely.

When Dad was outside, he listened to Ma Perkins’ soap opera but if Dad came inside he turned it off. He was saving it for the war news.

On Saturday night, the family listened to the Grand Ole Opry, Lum and Abner, Minnie Pearl, Lonzo and Oscar, etc. Dad’s bark was worse than his bite though.

Sincerely,

Bonza Byrd Witt
