Lady Dawgs drop two straight, win at Todd

The Lady Bulldogs still have one of the best records in the region, but the team is in a spot it hasn’t been in all year long. The team is coming off of back-to-back losses, one to Cumberland County on Tuesday night, 50-47, and one to Russell County on Friday night, 67-59.

The Lady Dawgs got back on the winning track Monday as Clinton County defeated Todd County Central, 70-51, in the opening round of the All “A” Classic 4th Regional Tournament.

Clinton County will be able to avenge an earlier loss last week as the Lady Dawgs will play the semi-final round game against Cumberland County Wednesday at Cumberland County.

Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 in Burkesville, KY.

The Lady Dawgs improved its record to 18-3 on the year with the first round win in the All “A” Classic Regional Tournament.

The game started off slow and with several fouls, mainly on Todd County. The Lady Bulldogs lived from the foul line for the entire game hitting 35 of 41 total foul shots.

The Lady Dawgs jumped out to a 7-2 lead with 2:48 on the clock in the first quarter.

Clinton County finished the quarter with an 11-8 lead, nine of those points coming from the foul line.

During the second quarter, Clinton County started to extend its lead somewhat, but Todd County remained in the game. The Lady Dawgs grabbed a 15 point lead on a free throw by Boils, 25-10, but Todd County managed to cut the lead to 10 points by the end of the first half, 30-20.

As the second quarter rolled around, Todd County Central didn’t back down against the Lady Dawgs.

The Lady Rebels did manage to cut the lead to seven points midway through the third quarter, but that was as close as Todd County would get as Clinton County led at the end of three quarters, 54-37.

The final quarter was just a formality for the Lady Dawgs as Clinton County cruised during the final eight minutes.

The Lady Dawgs outscored the Lady Rebels 16-14 in the period for a final of 70-51.

Clinton County’s Ansley Stalcup had a career high night with 37 points. She hit 19 of 22 from the foul line.

The Lady Dawgs hosted the Lady Lakers of Russell County on Friday night in hopes of handing the Lady Lakers its second district loss and securing the number one seed in the 16th District, but it was not meant to be.

Clinton County started off the game on the slow side, but took an early 4-3 lead in the first quarter with 5:32 on the clock.

Russell County then put together a 9-0 run to finish the quarter. With Clinton County’s Allie Hopper hitting only one of two from the foul line with 1:32 on the clock, Russell County finished the quarter with a seven point lead, 12-5.

During the second quarter, Clinton County started to come alive and fought back to regain the lead.

The Lady Dawgs’ defense held Russell County to zero field goals during the first four minutes, allowing Clinton County to cut the lead to two points with 4:20 on the clock, 15-13.

Clinton County then tied the game at 15 on a field goal by Macy Campbell, but Russell County, still without a field goal, hit two free throws to take a two point advantage, 17-15.

Lady Dawg McKenzie Polston was left wide open at the top of the three point line where she squared up and drilled a three pointer to give Clinton County a one point lead, 18-17, with 2:45 on the clock.

Ansley Stalcup hit a field goal to put Clinton County up by three points, but Russell County’s first field goal of the quarter came at the three point line to tie the score at 20 with less than two minutes remaining in the half.

Polston hit one of two from the foul line to regain the lead, followed by a field goal by Stalcup, 23-20.

Russell County cut the lead to one on a basket, but two free throws by Stalcup added to Clinton County’s lead with 54 seconds on the clock, 25-22.

The Lady Dawgs added to its lead with one more free throw for the quarter, 26-22, but Russell County hit a field goal with 12 seconds on the clock to cut the lead to two points at the half, 26-24.

The third quarter was a game changer for the Lady Dawgs as Russell County exploded on the offensive end.

Russell County opened the half with an 8-0 run to take a 32-26 lead.

A three pointer by Campbell cut the lead to three points, followed by a basket by Joelie Hicks to get to within one point, 32-31.

Russell County then put together an 11-6 run to move up by six points, 43-37 with 1:54 remaining.

Clinton County then fell silent for the final two minutes of the period while Russell County added nine more points to finish the third quarter, 52-37.

The final quarter saw Clinton County playing catch up for the entire eight minutes.

The Lady Dawgs opened with an 8-2 run to cut the lead to nine points, 54-45, but back-to-back baskets by Russell County extended the Lady Lakers’ lead to 13 points, 58-45.

Back-to-back three pointers by Stalcup, followed by a three point play by Bree Boils gave the Lady Dawgs new life and cut Russell County’s lead to four points with 3:39 remaining in the game.

The late fourth quarter surge was admirable by the Lady Dawgs, however, it wouldn’t be enough to secure the win as Russell County continued to dominate on the offensive end of the floor.

Russell County jumped out to an eight point lead with three minutes on the clock and Clinton County came back and cut the lead to four with 2:05 remaining, but that was as close as the Lady Dawgs would get with time winding down.

Russell County finished the game from the line and handed Clinton County its second loss in a row, 67-59.

The Lady Dawgs lost its second game of the season at the hands of the Cumberland County Lady Panthers Tuesday night, in a game that should have been an easy win for Clinton County.

During the two team’s first matchup on December 16, Clinton County defeated the Lady Panthers, 59-32 at home.

Tuesday night’s matchup was a whole different ball game and it cost the Lady Dawgs the “W.”

The first eight minutes of the game was close and it was evident from the fans perspective the Lady Dawgs were off a step.

Cumberland County didn’t back down and took the ball straight to Clinton County without hesitation.

The Lady Dawgs’ largest lead of the quarter came with 52 seconds remaining in the quarter, 13-9, but Cumberland County scored back-to-back goals to tie the score at 13 after the first eight minutes.

The second quarter was much slower for both teams offensively, however, Clinton County couldn’t hold the Lady Panthers on defense long enough to sustain a good lead. Clinton County finished the quarter with nine points to Cumberland County’s seven for a 22-20 halftime lead.

During the third quarter, Clinton County began to show life. After Cumberland County took the lead on a three point play, 23-22, the Lady Dawgs put together an 8-1 run for a six point advantage, 30-24.

The quarter ended with Clinton County outscoring the Lady Panthers, 13-8, for a 35-28 lead.

As the fourth quarter got underway, Cumberland County opened up with an 11-2 run to take the lead, 39-37, with 3:56 on the clock.

Clinton County tied the score at 39, but Cumberland County came back and took a two point lead, 41-39.

The Lady Dawgs tied the game again at 41, but the Lady Panthers hit back-to-back goals for a four point lead, 45-41 with two minutes remaining.

Clinton County’s Hicks cut the lead to two points on a field goal, but Cumberland County hit two free throws to extend the lead back to four points, 47-43.

With less than a minute to play, Stalcup hit a field goal to cut the lead to two points, but one of two from the line for the Lady Panthers extended the lead to three points with 41 seconds.

With a half of a minute remaining, Dicken made a spin move in the lane to cut the lead to one point, 48-47. Clinton County fouled to stop the clock, sending the Lady Panthers to the line where Cumberland County hit both for a three point lead, 50-47.

The final possession of the game saw Clinton County with two really good looks at a chance to tie the game, however, Boils’ shot rimmed out as well as Stalcup’s three pointer off the rebound. As the buzzer sounded, Clinton County was handed its first district loss of the season, 50-47.

With the two district losses, Clinton County is unofficially in the number two slot in district pairings. Russell County has two remaining district games to be played before final seedings will be official. As of right now, Russell County sits on a 3-1 district record with Clinton County, now finished with regular season district play, at 5-2 on the year.


Allie Hopper took the ball to the goal during Tuesday’s loss against Cumberland County. Clinton County’s loss was its second of the season. The Lady Dawgs were also defeated by Russell County Friday.

Bree Boils put up a three pointer Tuesday night during the first half against Cumberland County. The Lady Dawgs defeated Todd County Central Monday night in the opening round of the All “A” Classic 4th Regional Tournament to improve its record to 18-3 on the year.
