Dawgs defeat Allen County/Scottsville

The Clinton County Bulldogs improved its record to 16-7 on the year with a hard fought win against Allen County/Scottsville Saturday night, 62-56.

Clinton County started off on a good note, jumping out to a 12-6 lead with 4:50 on the clock with a three pointer by Lance Claywell, a field goal and a three pointer by Ethan Smith and back-to-back buckets by Keifer Dalton.

Allen County scored at the 4:01 mark, followed by another bucket by Dalton for a 14-8 lead.

Clinton County went dry for the remaining 3:20, which allowed Allen County to tie the score before the quarter ended, 14-14.

To start the second quarter, Allen County took the lead on a free throw, but a three pointer by Claywell gave the Dawgs the lead, 17-15.

Claywell hit another basket at the 5:56 mark for a 19-15 lead, followed by back-to-back buckets by Smith, 23-15.

Allen County scored at the 4:50 mark, but Colin Langford hit a basket to extend the lead to seven, 25-18.

Allen County scored back-to-back field goals to cut the lead to three points with 2:50 before halftime, but Claywell hit two of his own to reach a 29-22 halftime lead.

The Dawgs came out at the half cold from the floor allowing Allen County to make a 7-0 run to tie the score at 29 with 6:01 on the clock.

Allen County added to that lead with a three pointer, 32-29, but two free throws by Dalton stopped the bleeding somewhat, 32-31.

Allen County then pressed on and hit another three pointer, 35-31, but two free throws by Langford and a field goal by Dalton put both teams back to even at 35 all, with less than four minutes on the clock in the third quarter.

Dalton took the lead on a jumper from the lane at the 3:30 mark. Allen County, however, answered and tied the score at 37.

At the 3:06 mark, Dalton hit another jumper, but once again Allen County answered with a field goal to keep things even, 39-39.

The remainder of the period was back and forth scoring for both teams, but Clinton County came out on top after three, 45-43.

Both teams matched each other point for point for the first four minutes of the final quarter with Allen County taking a one point lead with 3:09 remaining, 54-53.

Claywell answered with a three pointer from the corner at the 2:52 mark for a two point lead, 56-54.

Clinton County then went into stall mode and eventually Dalton was sent to the line with 1:06 remaining on the clock, hitting only one of two, 57-54.

Allen County hit two of its own from the foul line to cut the Dawgs’ lead to one point.

Claywell was sent to the line with 46 seconds remaining, hitting two of two and he also went to the line with 20 seconds, hitting one of two for a four point lead, 60-56.

With 12 seconds remaining, Dalton forced a turnover, getting the steal, and was fouled. Dalton hit two of two from the line for a 62-56 lead and what would be the final score, giving Clinton County its 16th win of the season.

Clinton County traveled to Caverna Tuesday, too late for press deadline, and will host Glasgow on Friday for Sweetheart festivities and Cancer Awareness Night.

Fans are urged to wear pink to show support for those who have battled cancer.

Friday night’s game will tip off immediately following the Lady Dawgs game, which begins at 6 p.m.
