Sports move outside in springtime . . . sometimes

Spring sports can be one of my favorite times of the year, with everything moving outside in the fresh air . . . or as the case has been this week and is projected to stay that way for the rest of the week – not.

Rain on Monday and Tuesday, and projections that it will continue daily for the rest of this week and into the weekend, have put a damper on spring sports schedules this week, but this time of the year, that’s the way it goes. Pretty much hit and miss.

Still, there are games and matches on tap this week for our spring sports teams, and just in case the weather experts are wrong about what we can expect this week, here is what is on tap.

Our Racket Dawgs are slated to host matches against Monroe County on Thursday (GV-BV) and with Casey County on Friday (GV) and will travel to Bowling Green on Saturday to take on Logan County (GV-BV).

On the diamonds, the Bat Dawgs were to make up a game on Wednesday for the second time at Cumberland County, then will hit the road for games at Russell County on Thursday, at Clay County, Tennessee on Friday then will take part in the Wood Bat Classic at Monroe County on Saturday.

The Lady Bat Dawgs are set to host Cumberland County on Thursday, then hit the road for a game at Taylor County on Friday and Wayne County on Saturday.

Gonna be a busy week if the weather breaks.

Golf has a new ambassador – and he’s young

No secret that the one single PGA event that I pretty much watch from start to finish is the first major event of the year, last weekend’s Masters.

Along with golf fans across the world, I watched the sport take in a new ambassador last week when Jordan Spieth stole the hearts of everyone, picking up the wire to wire win with a four shot, 18 under par victory over tied for second place finishers Justin Rose and “lefty” Phil Mickelson, both of whom finished at 14 under.

The top rated golfer in the world – right now – Rory McIlroy, was six strokes back at 12 under.

The only thing this year’s Masters tournament didn’t really have was a lot of excitement down the stretch on Sunday. Spieth pretty much commanded the entire event and especially the final 18 holes, with his next three aforementioned competitors never really making a run at all.

It was Spieth’s humble demeanor throughout the entire week and especially in the post-tournament events that continue throughout this week, that has made him the new sweetheart of the sport.

Supposedly a “gentlemen’s game” (except when me and my buddies play), the game certainly has a new gentleman in its ranks.

By the way, all of this, and he’s just 21 years old. Seriously – I’ve got some clubs in my golf bag that are more than 21 years old.

Maybe that’s my problem.

“Let’s get outside and enjoy something.”
