A suspect has been arrested and charged in connection to the break-in at Dyer Drug Company, located off the square in Albany.

Danny Shawn Brown, 43, of Albany, was arrested Saturday, April 18, 2015, at his home. As of Monday morning, Brown was charged with burglary in the third degree, and criminal mischief in the first degree according to Albany City Police Chief Ernest Guffey.

Guffey said there will be more charges pending and the investigation is ongoing.

The break-in occurred early Thursday morning when an alarm was triggered around 2:30 a.m.

Owner and Pharmacist Dr. Arica Collins said she received a call that an alarm had been triggered, then she notified local law enforcement.

“At that point we had police dispatched,” Collins said. “It all appeared to be secure. We got another notification around 3:30 or so and the officer requested that I come to the pharmacy. That’s when we came up and looked through the window and saw the ceiling tiles down.”

Collins said once they entered the pharmacy, she saw evidence of a break-in, but officers didn’t find anyone in the building.

Dyer Drug was equipped with video surveillance and the suspect was caught on camera entering the store.

“The video shows him putting things in his pockets. He wasn’t able to get away with much because everything of real value was locked in the safe. It wasn’t a real good payday for him,” Collins said.

Collins said her surveillance system worked perfectly and she is thankful for that.

“We have excellent security,” Collins said. “We have lots of footage the Kentucky State Police and local authorities were able to use to conduct their investigation and get a pretty good description of the person responsible. I want to thank the authorities for doing a thorough investigation. I think they did a good job.”

The destruction of the ceiling tiles, as well as the internet and phone cables put Dyer Drug out of full business for most of the day Thursday, however, Collins said she and her staff continued to fill prescriptions as best they could without having internet or phone service.

“The biggest issue was reconnecting the security, internet and phone line,” Collins said. “We can’t do much without the internet. We tried to fill what we could and we tried to talk to the customers as they came to the door.”

Collins said the store was back in business by the following day.

“We stayed late and my staff worked hard in order to get everything ready for the next day,” Collins said. “Everybody seemed to pull together during this time of adversity.”

The KSP, Albany City Police and the Clinton County Sheriff’s Department all aided in the investigation.
