Clinton County’s unemployment rate fell nearly one and one-half percent between April and March of this year, dropping to 6.8 percent in April, according to the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training, an agency of the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet.
The April, 2015 rate of 6.8 percent, is also more than three percent lower than it was a year ago when the agency reported Clinton County’s jobless rate as being 9.9 percent.
The drop last month in unemployment in Clinton County followed a trend across Kentucky for the same period that saw 119 of the state’s 120 counties realize a drop in it’s jobless rates.
Only Union County showed an increase in unemployment between March and April of this year.
Clinton County’s unemployment rate is based on a civilian labor force of 3,833 adults, of which 3,571 were employed in April, leaving 262 local residents in the jobless ranks.
Other counties in the Lake Cumberland Area Development District, and the respective unemployment rate, included: Cumberland (5.7), Adair (6.5), Russell (9.3) and Wayne (7.2).
Woodford County recorded the lowest jobless rate in the Commonwealth at 3.4 percent. It was followed by Fayette and Oldham counties, 3.6 percent each; Scott and Shelby counties, 3.7 percent each; Boone and Owen counties, 3.8 percent each; and Anderson, Campbell, Jessamine, and Spencer counties, 3.9 percent each.
Magoffin County recorded the state’s highest unemployment rate – 12.5 percent. It was followed by Harlan County, 10 percent; Leslie County, 9.4 percent; Russell County, 9.3 percent; Letcher County, 9.2 percent; Breathitt County, 8.8 percent; Knott County, 8.7 percent; Clay and Elliott counties, 8.6 percent each; and Floyd and Wolfe counties, 8.3 percent each.
Unemployment statistics are based on estimates and are compiled to measure trends rather than actually to count people working. Civilian labor force statistics include non-military workers and unemployed Kentuckians who are actively seeking work.
They do not include unemployed Kentuckians who have not looked for employment within the past four weeks.
The statistics are not seasonally adjusted because of the small sample size for each county. The data should only be compared to the same month in previous years.
