Election officials will perform recanvass in Secretary of State race as part of statewide action

In a rare occurrence for a statewide primary election, a recanvass of votes in one race will be conducted statewide on Thursday morning, May 26 at 9 a.m. local prevailing time in all counties in Kentucky.

Hilda Legg, a Republican candidate for Secretary of State, filed with the state election commission seeking the recanvass of votes cast in the May 17 primary after losing to apparent GOP nominee Bill Johnson statewide by only 1,114 votes.

The recanvass will take place this Thursday by each county’s board of elections, including here in Clinton County, to determine if there is any change in the vote totals from the voting machine count and absentee ballots that were cast on election day.

Legg, of Somerset, and Johnson, of Elkton, were seeking the Republican nomination for Secretary of State, with the winner to face Alison Grimes, the Democrat nominee, in November.

Grimes unseated incumbent Elaine Walker, who had been appointed a few months ago by Governor Steve Beshear to fill out the unexpired term of Trey Grayson, who resigned the position soon after losing a bid for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate last year.

In last week’s primary, Legg carried Clinton County by 130 votes in a light turnout, receiving 508 votes to Johnson’s 378 votes.

The Clinton County Election Commissioners will join the other 119 counties in the state to conduct the local recanvass of votes at 9 a.m. Thursday.

Results of the local and state recanvass results will be published in next week’s Clinton County News.
