The Recreation Park Board was scheduled to conduct its regular meeting last Thursday, June 25. However, official business could not be conducted due, once again, to the lack of enough members present to constitute a quorum to conduct official business.

Six members were on hand, just one member shy of a quorum, and although various matters, including finalizing plans for Saturday’s July 4th celebration, were discussed, no votes could be taken.

Those present did, however, discuss last minute preparations for the upcoming July 4th events and fireworks show, including agreeing to be the lone vendor for soft drinks that will be sold at the park on Saturday. Concession vendors will be set up at the park, but the board will sell all soft drinks and bottled water for $1 each. They will also have available at the park’s concession stand popcorn and Slushies.

It was also noted that proceeds made from the events held Saturday would go toward finalized payment on the playground equipment and paving of the walking track whichwill be the next major project the board will undertake in the near future.

Board members also discussed the ongoing situation with complaints about conditions at the park restrooms, primarily the need for a door to be installed in the women’s restroom.

Board member Jay Garner, in noting that Park Director Bobby Reneau needed help during the summer months to work to maintain the park, suggested the board ask the Area Technology Center to build solid doors to be installed in the restrooms.

There are always ongoing problems with the restrooms being the target of vandals. Garner again suggested consulting with local district judges in asking that community service workers be utilized to work at the park.

The board members present also briefly discussed the next major event at the park–the last fundraiser of the calendar year–that being the U.S. 127 Yard Sale.

Park Director Reneau said he had already been contacted by several prospective vendors who wished to rent booth space at the park and was looking forward to it being a full park of yard sale vendors to set up at the park this year.

The next regular meeting of the park board is scheduled for Thursday, July 30 at 6 p.m. at the park and is open to the general public.
